What is the danger that Roy Moore poses to the Senate GOP?

Judge Roy Moore will do what is right for Alabama and for America. And when Majority Leader McConnell calls for a unanimous vote to declare the Senate to be in a Pro Forma Session, Senator Moore will not mislabel it. If Congress is in recess, and no serious business is being conducted, he will vote to call it a recess. You see, Congress has these “pro forma” sessions that pretend Congress is still in session so the President cannot make any recess appointments to any position. But I suspect the key to these votes is that they have been unanimous. Under Senate rules, if just one senator doesn’t play ball, a vote is required on the record. Senator Moore is likely to be that one senator. And the other senators don’t want to be on the record, sabotaging their President. And therein lies the $30 million problem….

Once upon a time, Presidents routinely made recess appointments. President Clinton made 139 recess appointments, and President George W. Bush made 171. But when he was majority leader, Senator Reid used the pro forma rules to stymie President Bush. Turnabout is fair play. Senator McConnell used the same technique to stymie President Obama appointees. Of course, President Obama, with no respect for tradition or rules, appointed people anyway, only to have his appointments struck down by the Supreme Court.

If the vote has to be unanimous, why didn’t any Republicans stop Reid?

This article is speculative in assuming actions by Moore not in evidence

The moment the accusation was made I realized that if it worked, and Moore lost as a result, that the Left would use the Accusation Card (TM) against every conservative everywhere. It wouldn’t matter if the conservative was just a candidate or if they’d been in office thirty years. Soon, all conservatives would be accused out of office. I sent $50 to Moore from Florida. Apparently, a good many people also did the same as articles report Moore raised millions the week of the accusation. More power to him.

Hopefully, this phase of bizarre-world accusation politics will come to a swift conclusion.

That's completely incorrect. Think about it, if it required a unanimous vote then it never would have happened, ever. The fact is that both the majority and the minority party can call a pro-forma session of the Senate. Schumer has been blocking recess appointments this time around as McConnell blocked them under Obama.

You are entitled to hope but it isn't going to happen. The Democrats will not let it die. They'll pick up where McConnell left off and keep this going for the next two years. In 2018, every Republican candidate for the Senate is going to either defend or condemn Senator Moore during their campaign, and the "well the people of Alabama made their choice" isn't going to work as an answer.

McConnell started all this in the hope that he could keep Moore from the Senate. Having failed, the GOP establishment is going to have to deal with it going forward.

Good question. At first I though it was because they were really Democrats pretending to be Republicans.

Now however with the latest sex scandal in Congress and how taxpayer money was used to silent witnesses I am beginning to believe it is blackmail.

How many get to Congress and discover they can do almost anything they want and they will be protected only to discover that someone is watching and taking notes. The leadership is not protecting the congressman but gathering blackmail material.

But if Judge Roy Moore does gain access to the inner circle of the Senate, the dam, already leaking, shall develop a new crack, and the boy that stood at the dike (represented here as Mitch McConnell) will be swept away as he runs out of fingers to keep the sea at bay.

Integrity has many forms.

Gosh, I hope not. But there is a certain contrarian logic to your scenario. This eat-your-own politics is particularly destructive. You would think that the pubbies would hang together so that they don’t hang separately. But, apparently not.

Mr Turtle and the democrats will find themselves between a rock and a hard place when Roy Moore wins the election and shows up in DC to be sworn in!

How do they refuse to seat Moore in the senate when they haven’t made a move to expel Al “Groper” Franken?

(US Constitution, Article I, Section 5, clause 2)

Democrats have nothing to lose because their voters back every dirty move they make.

But the GOPe will be sweating bullets.

They know their next trip out the senate door might really be their last trip out the senate door if they don’t shape up.

When Obama tried to appoint Garland to fill Scalia’s seat, the Senate voted to be in a Pro Forma Session to stop Obama.

But I believe the Senate called a vote on it. If the author here is correct, there must have been a vote because democrat senators surely objected to a pro forma.

In this case then, all democrats are objecting to a ‘recess’ ad McConnell is herding all the GOP Senators to do likewise without a vote that puts them on the record. The shows McConnell controls the GOP Senate and it is surely because of the campaign funds behind him.

“if Judge Roy Moore does gain access to the inner circle of the Senate, the dam, already leaking, shall develop a new crack, “

While a crack can serve to let the water out, thus draining the swamp, cracks can also let light shine in, which is really needed in the US Senate.

He diminishes the influence wielded by RINOs like John McCaine, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins. They might not be able to obstruct the Trump agenda if their power is diminished.

He makes McConnell look wimpy if McConnell just put so much money against a candidate and still his man loses.
