I don’t mean clandestine militia. I mean a militia of the people who overtly take up arms and tell the sheriff to stay out of it.

I’m kinda with you. But I’d prefer to see the sheriffs lead things. Most sheriffs are good guys, even in liberal states. And many states still have sheriff’s posse laws on the books. That might be a good (and legal) place to start.
