Budweiser's space-bound barley seeds to advance first 'Bud on Mars'

Budweiser is sending barley seeds to the International Space Station to advance its bid to be the first beer on Mars.

Anheuser-Busch, the brewing company behind the "Great American Lager," announced on Tuesday (Nov. 21) details about its experiments bound for Earth orbit. Twenty barley seeds will launch on board SpaceX's next Dragon resupply mission to the space station, where they will be subjected to microgravity for 30 days and tested for germination.

"Budweiser is always pushing the boundaries of innovation and we're inspired by the collective American Dream to get to Mars," said Ricardo Marques, Budweiser vice president. "We are excited to begin our research to brew beer for the Red Planet."

First announced at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas in March, the Budweiser experiments are the first step in the company's long-term commitment to have beer available for the first astronauts on Mars — whenever they might get there.

The Clydesdales provide the key ingredient, and they won’t fare too well on Mars.

Is this for real. This has been done with numerous seeds previously. A nice try for publicity but it's been done before. Maybe they could try to do some brewing in zero gravity, that would be something new.

Well at least beer will be available on Mars for those who like beer. I’ll wait until they can serve steaks. 8>)

Shouldn't Budweiser be sending rice also as a major ingredient in their "beer"?

Meanwhile, the real plan is to grow vodka in space:

“Maybe they could try to do some brewing in zero gravity, that would be something new.”

Yeasts either top ferment or bottom ferment. Be kind of hard to do either in zero g.

Yes, if mankind is going to attempt long duration space flights we are going to have to figure out how to brew in zero G. Might as well start experimenting now, we might have to come up with a new type of yeast or some kind of centrifugal brew pot.

Budweiser is not American-owned. It is Belgian.
