I remember reading Jaynes when the book first came out. I didn’t buy-into all of it at the time, but it has remained with me, and become an influence upon what I believe.
I have never had any problem reconciling God, First Cause, with a concept of evolution - and I’ve never understood why others do.
It makes sense to me that at some point, Man - as Man - was ‘inserted’ into the animal, when the animal was ready to receive the “spark”, according to God’s plan.
Sometimes people who call themselves ‘atheist’ are just not able to accept organized religion and all of the mess in much of it.
It doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t accept a concept of God, if it were presented to them in a different, less dogmatic form.

There are many things that do NOT make sense to anyone which God has clearly stated as truth in His Word.
Point being is that truth does not have to make sense to us in order for it to be reality.
There is no biblical basis whatsoever in the bible supporting any form of evolution.
True science itself disproves evolution.
If we evolved from lower forms of animals, we would be able to interbreed with them.
