Just saying by the standards of today it seems not so appropriate.

I think that's the case because there is an assumption that "dating" has become a euphemism for having relations or as they say now, "hooking up". Then it looks like the 32 year old has been playing the same game for 13 years and can take advantage of the comparatively naive 17 year old. These days, the millions of girls and young women who are getting HPV are likely getting it from fellows their own age.

Those fellows, the good guys, who stayed in school, or served in the military and didn't play around found that like minded girls often got married by the time they were 25. This probably goes quintuple back in the '70s, and in the South. A substantial portion of the older single women may have been more interested in their careers than in a traditional family.

I was born in the 70s, so I would say for myself and my generation, that we really weren't mature enough even in our early 20s to start families. And I think it has gotten worse since then. We sexually mature at the same ages as generations before, but are emotionally and mature in other ways way later in life. A 20 year in the 1950s probably had the maturity of a 32 year old today.
