Is it just me or is CBS trying to make it appear this is a slight at Trump when in reality this general was talking in generic terms? In other words if any President asked him to do something illegal they have protocols of how hey would respond. CBS is trying to make this out to be about Trump. This is outrageous!

In the General’s defense, this is Fake News. The General was stupid to answer the way he did.

I have re-read the article and nowhere do I see a quote naming President Trump. There is no context to the general’s comments. I think this is CBS trying to infer that the holder’s of the nuclear code don’t trust Trump. Like I said this is really outrageous.

This guy is a Harvard desk jockey who got all his promotions to a 2,3,4 star general under Obama.

Trump needs to make an example of this guy, he is an Obama General.

Nominated by Obama to head SAC.

CAN’T BE TRUSTED!

Maybe so, but that is not the way it came out. Sometimes you are supposed to keep things inside the conference room. He needs to go.

I agree with you.

“And if it’s illegal, guess what’s going to happen? I’m going to say, ‘Mr. President, that’s illegal.’ And guess what he’s going to do? He’s going to say, ‘What would be legal?’

If the President issues an illegal order, I hope like heck someone has the balls to let him know.

CBS is just stirring the pot.

It’s not just you. The general appears to be responding to accusations at a conference, explaining that the US military command is well versed in US law regarding nukes, has safeguards against irrational and illegal acts, and is not going to be caught flat-footed wondering what to do. CBS has twisted that into a fake news opportunity to bash Trump, since THEY assume Trump is irrational. The general on the other hand emphasized that the US has measures to deal with anything the Norks might dish up, and that Trump is working with other countries to deal with NK rationally.

Big thanks to CBS for making the US less secure, by giving first strikers reason to think a leftist ideologue might block a US response via legalisms.

That’s what I thought too. Isn’t it a responsibility of ALL military, at any rank, to not carry out an illegal order? Somebody help me out.

I think it is the latter. In the event, the president would look in a notebook containing contingency plans and select one of them. These contingency plans are well thought out. Issues of legality of the options are already resolved. The only case that could be of serious concern is if the president was not competent. But this is always a danger in having command authority devolve on one person. I can understand how this might be of concern.

Suppose, for example, a president was embroiled in a scandal and decided to give the order to mount a bombing campaign against some small country so as to get the scandal off the front page. Would the Air Force leadership tell the president that it is illegal? As we have seen, the answer to that is no.

Putting these two together is comparing apples and oranges. But that is how CBS rolls. And that is why they have this stupid story.
