Democrats in Oklahoma picked up a key state Senate seat in a Tuesday special election, marking the fourth seat Democrats have gained in special elections in the state this year.
The Tulsa World reports Democrat Allison Ikley-Freeman won a close race over Republican Brian OHara in Oklahomas Senate District 37. The race was held to fill the seat of Republican Dan Newberry, who was leaving the state Senate.
Ikley-Freeman, a 26-year-old lesbian, defeated OHara by 31 votes.
"The odds were not in our favor, and we knew it, but we knew if we could fight hard, we had a chance," Ikley-Freeman told NBC News. "It was worth fighting for."
The normally conservative district, which is in Tulsa County and is part of Oklahomas 1st Congressional District, was won by President Trump by nearly 40 points in the 2016 presidential election. Trump picked up 61.4 percent of the vote in the district compared to 32.7 won by then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Ikley-Freemans victory comes a week after Democrats saw victories across the country, including sweeping statewide elections in Virginia and winning the New Jersey governors race.

The left is very motivated. Pay back time.
The right is disappointed that nothing is getting done in D.C. Promises are not being kept.
Only 4437 total votes cast in the election. So she won by 31. Seems like Mr. O’Hara could have done a bit more meet and greet the old fashioned way, door to door.
Well, that’s certainly good news.
Oops! Read that wrong. That’s certainly BAD news. For some reason I didn’t read it right and thought they flipped Republican. I thought that would have been interesting if they had flipped Republican considering the Dems have done well in local elections this past year. Come to think of it, I do recall reading about this - I may have actually posted an article.
Again, this is not good, and I think it’s a warning sign the GOP should not ignore. We don’t want the same fate Obama had.
True. Sadly for us, the gopE still manage to screw it up.
Not a good sign; Governor Sununu had better get as many positive things done as he can possibly do. The sooner the better.
