UCLA players thank Trump, get suspended indefinitely

President Trump got his wish Wednesday afternoon when the three UCLA basketball players busted in China for shoplifting thanked him for his help in getting them home.

The three, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley and LiAngelo Ball — younger brother of Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball — also apologized to their families and their school, while thanking the Chinese cops for treating them well.

“I would like to thank President Trump and the United States government for the help they provided. I am grateful to be back home and I will never make a mistake like this again. I am extremely sorry for those that I let down,” said Ball, reading from a script in a monotone.

A contrite Riley and Hill expressed similar sentiments.

All three have been suspended indefinitely by UCLA.

i hope they did learn their lesson - and were relieved to be back on American soil. they dodged a bullet,big-time. i listened to their statements and think they are repentant so i accept their apology.i am glad they were suspended by UCLA for they tarnished the school’s reputation. as a Cali taxpayer i think this punishment is warranted. i hope they make more demands for their rehabilitation. people do make mistakes, hopefully not the same one twice.

We’ll see at least one of these “scholar-athletes” featured on a police blotter at some point in the future...guaranteed!

I heard a portion of Coach Alfords comments where he said they were suspended indefinitely. He listed some other restrictions, but I never heard him say they cannot practice or do their other conditioning requirements. They can’t play or travel with the team but perhaps they can practice so that when the suspension is lifted in a month or so they will be ready to go. They should be kicked off the team and expelled from the university. Otherwise it will be a mere slap on the wrist instead of several years in a Chinese prison. They thanked President Trump but they will always vote liberal.

How utterly sad that Otto Warmbier was incarcerated under the Obama regime. These players ought to thank their luck stars Trump was in office to help them out.

The picture at the top of the page already looks like a police lineup.

For no apparent reason, I am curious what they tried to steal. Was this all over Skittles and a drink, or what did they grab?

How about “I will never commit a crime again” ???

a mistake is a kindergartener writing 2+2=5...

stealing is not a mistake...

I think the “mistake” was stealing in China, rather than someplace that allows American athletes to get away with everything.

Suspended for the shoplifting incident or for invoking Trump’s name? The article doesn’t say. It is Kalifornia after all.

I watched the presentation and each player read a statement that covered all the bases. Each of them showed an attitude that reflected serious remorse for their actions.

They apologized to each entity they should have. They took ownership of what they did, and they described the actions for pretty much what they were.

What they did was reprehensible. That being said, I’m a person who screwed up as a young man. I dedicated myself to living a better life, and tried to follow through. I did.

As long as these young men do, I support them. We want a behavior modification. If that comes to fruition, good. I don’t want to see their lives severely impacted by an idiotic episode. A person’s life shouldn’t be altered radically by a few very wrong actions.

UCLA has suspended them indefinitely. They won’t be attending team meetings. They will not be able to suit up at games. They won’t be practicing with the team for a period of time, yet to be determined.

In all, I believe this has been handled rather well. UCLA took it very seriously. The players seem to be sorry. This is not going to be a painless process. I believe they know they screwed up, and they could be participating with the team if they hadn’t.

Should they be tossed from the team? Perhaps so. What I am most desiring to see, is three young men that learned their lesson and went on to become something far better.

All three men mentioned their families. One mentioned God.

I’m not sure what they could do now more than what they have. Perhaps this is the first step to manhood for them.

Lets hope so. These young men were given a great chance here, being on the team. I’d hate to see them lose out on that if they can clean up their act.

Time will tell. They will follow through, or take another path and destroy themselves to one degree or another.
