Trump Pentagon nominee on Texas shooting: It's 'insane' that civilians can buy 'assault' rifles
Washington Examiner ^ | Nov 7, 2017 | Travis J. Tritten

President Trump’s pick to head up the military health system lunged into the U.S. gun debate Tuesday during a Senate hearing, saying laws allowing civilians to purchase long guns like the Texas church shooter are “insane.”

Dean Winslow, a professor at Stanford University, offered up the assessment, seemingly unprompted, amid questions from Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., about the military’s treatment of domestic violence convictions during his nomination hearing to be assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.

Shaheen asked specifically whether Winslow believed a person such as Devin Patrick Kelley, who was jailed by the military for assaulting his wife and stepson, should have received a dishonorable discharge instead of the lesser bad conduct discharge.

Winslow at first pointed to what he called a single point of failure, apparently referring to the Air Force’s mistake of not reporting Kelley’s crime to civilian authorities, which allowed him to purchase guns. But then he went further.

“I’d also like to, and I may get in trouble with other members of the committee, just say how insane it is that in the United States of America a civilian can go out and buy a semi-automatic assault rifle like an AR-15, which apparently was the weapon that was used,” Winslow said. Kelley reportedly used a Ruger AR-556, which is similar in style to an AR-15.

Also during the hearing, Winslow was pressed by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the Armed Services chairman, to explain a reference in Winslow’s written answers to the committee about providing abortions to military women.

“I also believe that therapeutic abortion services should be provided by the military in appropriately staffed facilities,” Winslow wrote in the submitted questionnaire.

McCain read the quote and ask pointedly, “What do you mean by that?”

Winslow said he was glad for the opportunity to clarify his response and that he understands the military has long been barred by law from providing abortions in most cases.

Therapeutic abortions refer to situations in which the mother’s life is in danger, Winslow said.

“You better clean it up doctor or you are going to have trouble getting it through the Senate,” McCain warned.

We need firearms to protect ourselves from self-righteous pricks like the Dean Winslow’s of the world. His kind would round us all up and shove us into camps if they could. And we all know what happens after that.

Pull this ahole’s nomination and send him back to the People’s Republic of California.

This is getting redundant. There is so much hell raising about the guy getting a gun when you can buy the same thing on the street without any background check in any major city, or minor one, in the US. Anyone can get a gun. The trick is to be qualified to sell one and do the work to get it sold legally.

The military does not broadcast it’s business findings in the open and the discharge papers, the DD 214, contain a code that targets the reason for discharge. And if a person is discharged under less than honorable conditions, why didn’t this raise a red flag as to the persons privilege to own a gun? If they had looked, they would have seen that the offence that got him out would have taken away his right to bear.

It wouldn’t have stopped him from getting a gun, illegally, but when you consider the Obama Adminstration flooded the market with illegal weapons to try to catch cartel members. “fast and furious”, what’s one more? And before you libs out there go after me to protect that lying illegal, Fast and Furious began under the Obama administration, dating its inception to October 2009. (Obama took office in January 2009.) This was collaborated in a report by the Obama people and the US justice department. This directly contradicts Obama’s claim. He and Holder did it and it cost lives. But is it any different than selling guns illegally?

And if you take them away from the common citizens following the law, only the criminals will have them. So the good guy who shot the bad guy to save lives, would have been unarmed. More would have died. Justify that one.

This is a mistake Trump made - allowing too many establishment people in. Bannon and Gorka said so. Bannon called it their original sin. Many of the original MAGA people on the outside.

Wrong guy for the job.

He’s going to push for mental health exams and weapon registration/confiscation.

His abortion push is to combat existing lousy decisions regarding assignments for women in the military.

Are you certain Obama implemented fast and furious to snare the cartel?
It always appeared to me that the intended result was more shooting and louder screeching for gun control.

The guy IS Stupid! well said. The Second Amendment Primer ,by Les Adams —Guns ,Crime and Freedom,by Wayne LaPierre ; More Guns Less Crime John R.Lott,Jr. ; Imprimis - March 2013 The Second Amendment as an expression of First Principles by Edward J.Erler; “Best most effective way to enslave people ‘ posted by Bill Federer 04/18/2016 WND; The Patriot Post -On the right to Keep and Bear arms ; and The First Civil Right :To keep and Bear Arms by Mark Alexander ,Jan27,2016 Not to forget Joseph Story -A Familiar Exposition on the Constitution of the United States ,Regnery Gateway ,1997 from the original pp319-20 sections 450-451 on our Second amendment— and the Aug.1999 Vol 28 #8 issue of Imprimis Putting God back in the Public Square -Disastrous Consequences pp5-6 asking the vital question
“When will they understand that secular solutions will never solve spiritual problems?” These ought be Required Reading. And note Joseph Story in his commentaries noted that when the Constitution was adopted the general if not universal sentiment in America was that Christianity should receive encouragement from the State.....” p.316 A Familiar Exposition of the Constitution of the United States p.316 Section 444.
ThatTexas trigger puller was an Atheist-he HATED Christianity and carried out his murderous attack lacking Christian morals. Common to Every mass murder since 1997 he acted. Now some have published as well that most mass murders or violence have in common the prescription of psychotropic (mood altering) drugs This has not yet been disclosed in this Texas shooter but trust in secular solutions -ie drug use /gun control is contrary to the founding principles. And as the Bible declares Cursed is the man who puts his trust inman, who makes flesh his arm/strength, and is turned from God. For Congress to respond to end the cycle of mass violence they need to encourage Christianity and public display of the Ten Commandments again ( as was once common in America)

"Funny, coming from a retired Air Force Colonel. It was the incompetence of the Airforce that allowed that scumbag to have guns in the first place. Tell us again how great the government is jerkoff." Not the same USAF leadership as when I was in.

I’ve never been asked for my DD-214 when purchasing a gun.

And how would they know if I even had one?

When I think of an Air Force general, the first image that pops up in my mind is Curtis LeMay.

“Some of Trump’s picks are baffling. Why aren’t these people vetted to ensure they agree with his platform?”

Answer: Ivanka and Jared.

The President has stated in the beginning that these two flaming liberals were his ‘closest and most trusted advisors’.

Capitulating on key social issues, while disappointing, is no surprise.

Citizens can as they have for many decades buy various rifles and or pistols.
Civilians can not buy military weapons.
That has not changed in many decades!
If a Pentagon nominee makes this comment they are certainly not a qualified candidate!

“”When I think of an Air Force general, the first image that pops up in my mind is Curtis LeMay.””

The one and only - plus the trademark cigar! The good Lord made only one of him! We have a framed picture of him in our living room with my husband in the late ‘70’s when he was our guest speaker at an open house we had at our flying club..He said he’d come for a half hour or so and ended up spending several hours visiting and showing some of his old WWII films. A super evening. My husband enjoyed shooting with him at an ourdoor range in OC, CA... His one and only hero!
