One could also say that the firearms laws that existed at the time of incidents like Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989 or Dunblane in Scotland and Port Arthur both in 1996 should have prevented them as well, but lawmakers do like flapping their mouths and playing gesture politics.
