Laura Plummer, 33, was arrested on drug charges after being caught carrying painkillers for her Egyptian husband.

“The painkillers were placed at the top of her suitcase, she wasn’t hiding them.

“We’ve been told she’s facing either 25 years in prison or the death penalty. We’re beside ourselves worrying that they’ll make an example of her.”

She was kept for five hours at the airport without an interpreter before signing a 38-page statement in Arabic which she thought would see her leave.

Really gets me that when I was in the international community, it was always brought up to me that Europeans ( especially ones from the UK ) were the smartest travelers around. Or I should say rubbed in my face. Even us dumb Americans knew enough not to bring drugs into another country, and certainly not a Muslim one. If one has to travel to those countries the best idea is to make arrangement to get prescriptions filled in that country or not to go at all.

She’s a drug mule.

Egypt, as most ME countries, is far more lax about prescription medications than the West. Most places you just go into a pharmacy and talk with the doctor (yes, a real doctor) telling them your history and what is wrong. They’ll go back and get all the meds necessary, bag it up, you pay and you’re out of there. That’s it.

I had pneumonia in Kuwait once. Went across the street to the pharmacy and walked out with a large bag of all sorts of prescription meds. Worked fantastic. Best service ever. It took 20 min.s and the cost was $45. I have never received that level of treatment at that price in the West.

“It’s beyond me why anyone would want to travel outside the USA. Ain’t nothing worth the risk.”

Yup. Besides, there’s more than a lifetime full of good people to meet and interesting places to see right here in the USA.
