At least 16 people have been shot inside a Texas church after a gunman opened fire during the Sunday morning service.

The shooting happened at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, where around 50 people usually attend service, according to local reports.

Witnesses said a man 'in full gear' walked inside the church and opened fire just before 10.30am.

Neighbors in the area said they may have heard the shooter reload multiple times.

Another witness at the scene said a two-year-old was also shot in the attack.

According to KSAT, there were at least six helicopters called in to transport victims to the hospital.

It's unclear if anyone was fatally wounded in the attack.

There’s a lot of people online with that name.

Zabasearch has a Christopher A Ward, 33, in Sutherland. He is one of 88 Chris Wards in Texas.

If the Facebook page is his, and it’s his anniversary, and his wife says they’ve been having problems, it sounds like this is a domestic gone atomic.

Do you have a link to the wife’s page?

But only one from Sutherland Springs. Again, NOT saying this is the guy. But this name is being reported by multiple sources.

I do not have a link. I am looking at it through my cell. Her name is "Joann Ward (Lookingbill)".

The pic is her and, I think, her father with an American flag in the pic. It says she lives in San Antonio so you can search there for her.

It is a suburb, okay with larger front and back yards, but a suburb still.

Look at it on Google Earth. It's a fairly isolated, older community surrounded by lots of farmland on each side. Looks like a few miles toward San Antonio before there is anything that could be called a suburb.

Of course it’s not only muslims. Why the sarcasm? I hadn’t made that assumption at all. It would have surprised me in this case.

Anchor on Fox keeps talking about the 11:30 “mass” at the Baptist Church. I think she’s never been to a Baptist church.

This situation sounds VERY similar to a fairly recent church shooting where a man shot up the place because his wife had left him and he wanted to kill her and the people who were supporting her. Anyone recall that incident?

Guy who lives nearby says it’s not a suburb, sounds like a small rural town, like thousands in Texas.

“Why do you automatically assume people in church are armed?”

That would be my assumption. Texas. Baptist Church. I would HOPE half of the congregation would have weapons in their pockets and/or purses. In my Baptist church I hope that’s the case.

I carry to my church all the time. I didn’t ask and I don’t care what they say. This will not happen to my sons.

I will leave the church if they ever find out and tell me I can’t carry anymore.

I believe that was a hair salon in Seal Beach CA, where the shooter was in a heated divorce with his wife and I believe there was a fight over kid custody. If I recall correctly, the shooter assumed some of the co-workers of the wife were egging her on against him. The husband walked in one day and simply shot everyone up then gave up.

She is from New Orleans and more than likely raised Catholic so she might just be referring to what she knows the name of the service to be
