Bowe Bergdahl, the solider who deserted his post in Afghanistan in 2009 and was subsequently captured by a Taliban affiliate, will not have to serve jail time for the crime. In a stunning announcement on Friday, the judge deciding the case ordered Bergdahl to pay $1,000 from his salary for the next 10 months. He will be demoted to the rank of E-1 during that time and after paying his fine he will be dishonorably discharged. Prosecutors asked the judge to sentence Bergdahl, who pleaded guilty to the charges, to 14 years in prison.

This ruling is a perfect example of the state of the US military.
Aren’t there more than a few servicemembers in Leavenworth for the horrible atrocities of slapping around a few enemy thusly denying their civil rights ? I wonder how the families of the troops killed looking for a deserter feel knowing their sons lives were worth a thousand bucks to the Army.

Sgt. Hutchinson, a Marine from my county, has been dragged through hell for what happened in Hamdia, or whatever the little hellhole was called — supposedly hogtied and shot an Iraqi, although his squadmates who pled guilty recanted that version and said their statements were given under extreme suress. The Navy went after him 3 times and finally got a conviction on the 3rd try.

I imagine the prosecution would have refuted Bergdahl’s account if it wasn’t generally true.

How much of this is due to Trump constantly yakking about executing him air calling him a traitor? Seems like a good way for the retiring judge to stick it to Trump.
