WASHINGTON — Paul Manafort and his former business associate Rick Gates were told to surrender to federal authorities Monday morning, the first charges in a special counsel investigation, according to a person involved in the case.
The charges against Mr. Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, and Mr. Gates, a business associate of Mr. Manafort, were not immediately clear but represent a significant escalation in a special counsel investigation that has cast a shadow over the president’s first year in office.
Mr. Gates is a longtime protégé and junior partner of Mr. Manafort. His name appears on documents linked to companies that Mr. Manafort’s firm set up in Cyprus to receive payments from politicians and businesspeople in Eastern Europe, records reviewed by The New York Times show.
Mr. Manafort had been under investigation for violations of federal tax law, money laundering and whether he appropriately disclosed his foreign lobbying.
Attempts to reach Mr. Gates on Monday were not successful. A spokesman for Mr. Manafort did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

LIMASSOL, Cyprus — A bank in Cyprus investigated accounts associated with President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, for possible money-laundering, two banking sources with direct knowledge of his businesses here told NBC News.

If they learned of this through FISA warrants obtained using the fake dossier, then Obama is in trouble, not Manafort.
This is how they do it. Find something, anything, on one of the underlings and then promise to make it all go away if they just squeal against the big fish. And whether they are telling the truth in their squealing makes no matter at all. Just squeal.
I see this one as Mueller’s attempt to distract from his own conflict of interest with Uranium One. This is the best that he’s got, which he launched only when people started to realize he has no business investigating anyone due to his own problems. WSJ op ed last week calling for Mueller’s resignation is the root cause of today’s announcement.
Yep, fishing out 10 year old documents or so. Completely irrelevant to the goal of the investigation.
Rather outside the scope of the 2016 campaign and Russian efforts to influence the election.
That “TRUMP!” blaring headline is pathetic.
They can squeeze all they want, but it will do no good if there is no incriminating Information. But if there is, whether we like it or not, we can’t complain if the truth is exposed.
Mueller may be protecting himself from being fired while prosecuting a case.

If Fisa warrants were the way they got some info, and the warrants were based on Dossier BS then as Judge Janine says all the case will be thrown out as Fruit of a Tainted Tree.
Sessions needs to get rid of Mueller for wasting tax money and twelling on something other than the 2016 campaign Russian Collusion.
Even Gen. Kelly can fire Mueller for cause.
