I believe WII started when Germany invaded Poland. That's when the Allies and Axis countries started formally declaring war against each other. The Spanish civil war was certainly a prelude though along with several other preludes. Examples - Germany annexing the Sudenten Land (sp) from Czechoslovakia and Italy in North Africa and Ethiopia. These preludes did not result in everyone declaring war against someone.
