In a move sending shock waves through Texas politics, House Speaker Joe Straus . . . said he wouldnt seek re-election.
Mr. Straus was seen as a moderate bulwark against the Tea Party and hard-line wings of the Texas GOP, and his surprise decision Wednesday came after a bitter legislative session during which he was often at odds with a more socially conservative legislative bloc.
Mr. Straus helped defeat a push by social conservativesincluding the governor and lieutenant governorto restrict public-bathroom options for transgender people. It was only one of a range of issues on which he clashed with Republican leaders in the state.

RINO Joe Straus was first elected Speaker of the Texas House in 2009 by all 65 Democrats and a gang of 11 RINOs to oust the the incumbent conservative Speaker. Despite having a majority or near majority of Republicans in the House, the cabal of all Democrats with the help of the RINOs have been able to keep Straus in power. Straus and his minions have obstructed or blocked the conservative agenda since that time.
Items that come to mind are: Paycheck protection (end companies being forced to deduct union dues from paychecks), bathroom bill that would keep men out of women's and girls bathrooms, showers, etc., and efforts to limit spending and conserve the rainy day fund. They were able to block the Sanctuary Cities bill until the recent session.
In 2014 Straus and his minions were able to delay the pro-life bill to set standards for abortion providers until so near the end of the session that Wendy Davis (Abortion Barbie) was able to filibuster to the end of the session. The bill eventually passed with Gov. Perry calling a special session followed by the extraordinary efforts of pro-life conservatives.

This may be the most consequential non-Federal RINO get yet. Straus was a huge impediment to conservative legislation in TX. With him out of the way, and his successor properly forewarned, things might actually start to get done according to the conservative GOP factions wishes. No more kowtowing to the left.

I heard this news yesterday. And let out a big ol’ whoop.
I’m now wondering why he’s stepping down. Is it because he knows he won’t be chosen as Speaker again, or do the RINOs and Dems have his replacement already chosen?

At the Texas level, it is AAA ball, and these moves are essential for keeping the swamp from regenerating. Heaven knows a lot of best were hounded out of office by these types (Sen. Peter Fitzgerald of IL comes to mind).

Strauss has been a pimple on Texas' ass for a long time. It will be good to see him gone, but I want to target every rino that voted for him as well.
