The NAACP has warned African-American travelers to be careful when flying with American Airlines.
The group issued an advisory late Tuesday, saying it has noticed "a pattern of disturbing incidents reported by African-American passengers, specific to American Airlines."
It said the incidents "suggest a corporate culture of racial insensitivity and possible racial bias" and advised travelers to exercise caution. "Booking and boarding flights on American Airlines could subject them [to] disrespectful, discriminatory or unsafe conditions," the advisory said.
American Airlines spokeswoman Shannon Gilson said the company was "disappointed" to hear about the advisory and is "committed to providing a positive, safe travel experience for everyone."
"Our team members -- a diverse community of gate agents, pilots, and flight attendants -- are proud to serve customers of all backgrounds," she said.
In response to NAACP President Derrick Johnson's call for an audience with the airline's leadership, Gilson said representatives from the organization would be invited to the company's headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.
"We are committed to having a meaningful dialogue about our airline and are ready to both listen and engage," she said.
The organization described four examples in particular -- including one in which it said an African-American woman and her infant child were removed from a flight from Atlanta to New York after she asked if their stroller could be retrieved from checked baggage before she left the plane.
The NAACP didn't provide the name of the woman or say when the events it described are alleged to have taken place. American Airlines didn't comment on the specific allegations.
Johnson said the NAACP's "growing list of incidents ... involves behavior that cannot be dismissed as normal or random."
In August, the organization issued a travel advisory for Missouri, citing several discriminatory incidents in the state as reasons for individual visitors to travel with "extreme caution."
It said at the time that the Missouri advisory was the first ever issued by the organization, at the state or national level.
I used to fly. And I flew after 9/11 for a number of years which was work-related. And after all the hassles... Upon retirement and self employment I just said “screw it I’m driving or taking a train, or a bus”. Besides, I’m 76 inches tall and I’m really not that comfortable in airplanes, just as I’m not that comfortable in 90% of the automobiles on the market today. In other words I (like many others) am outside the 90th percentile. If I was obese that would be another dynamic... (which leads me to wonder is the complaints are related to the obesity of the flyer)
I have a number reasons for not flying one of which is the hassle, and the other of which is the comfort, it is very uncomfortable squishing my tender knees into the back of the reclined seat in front of me.
It’s my choice to avoid flying, and I think a lot of the problems that are going on with this snowballing issue is physical comfort. Nobody likes to be outside their physical comfort zone so you have to create or optionize your physical comfort zone. For me that means not taking a commercial aircraft.
That's a crummy culture that does that.
I posit that deep down they know that they are not worthy of respect. Plus, in some cultures respect is only gained by violence and intimidation.
IMO those cultures are wholly incompatible with an advanced, rules-based society like ours that values self restraint.
BUT I COULD BE WAY OFF BASE WITH THAT.
Where have all the strong Black Americans that I grew up with and served with gone? I grew up in a unique little town in West Texas called Big Spring, we were the first integrated school in Texas. This was due mainly to our having an Air Force pilot training base here. On the street I grew up on there were Black’s, Whites, Hispanic, Native Americans and Cubans. All of these families had one thing in common and that was fathers either serving or working as civilians at Webb Air force base. Color was something we didn’t notice unless it was Red, White and Blue. Since we were all connected with the military we were all treated the same and treated each other the same. When I say the same I mean looked down on as military trash by those citizens of the city unrelated to the military. We stayed together in what I would call our own little gang. When I graduated High School myself and three others of our gang enlisted in the military, myself and Freddie Martinez went into the Army, Scott Goodblanket went into the Air force and Johnathan Dawson went into the Marine Corp. Within a year we were all serving in Vietnam and by the grace of God all Returned. A Black American, Hispanic American, Native American and this old White American, this was out gang. Freddie was the only one who stayed in the military and retired as a Sargent Major, the rest come back and went about our lives. We get together from time to time and the usual topic of our conversations is what has become of this country we so love. I started this with Black Americans but it’s not just there, it’s throughout all races. We seem to be getting weaker as we progress into the future. Our fear is there’s not allot of us left to hold this country together. We see this weakness in our own grand children. Everybody wants to stand out but nobody wants to stand up! With the exception of the few young men and women who still stand before the flag of the United States of America and swear an oath, this strength is sadly in a downfall. We all believe it due to a lack of strong family foundations, a lack of strong fathers and mothers who have forgotten their true purpose in life. The strength of our country and future relies on us raising our children to love, respect and protect this incredible gift we have been given.
I’m sure a sizable donation from AA to the NACCP will clear this issue right up...
AA clearly didn’t pony up the proper amount during this year’s shakedown drive.

Yep, sounds like Operation Push needs an infusion. Maybe those Justice Department deals where a company ‘settles’ a case with the government and part of that ‘settlement’ involves turning over millions to left-wing groups, maybe those deals are starting to dry out now.
