Clinton Campaign, DNC Paid for Research that Led to Russia Dossier
The Washington Post ^ | 6:21 p.m. EDT Tuesday, October 24, 2017 | Adam Entous, Devlin Barrett and Rosalind S. Helderman

The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about Donald Trump’s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.

Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.

Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community.

Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, retained the firm in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC. Prior to that agreement, Fusion GPS’s research into Trump was funded by a still unknown Republican client during the GOP primary.

The Clinton campaign and the DNC through the law firm continued to fund Fusion GPS’s research through the end of October 2016, days before Election Day.

Fusion GPS gave Steele’s reports and other research documents to Elias, the people familiar with the matter said. It is unclear how or how much of that information was shared with the campaign and DNC, and who in those organizations was aware of the roles of Fusion GPS and Steele. One person close to the matter said the campaign and the DNC weren’t informed of Fusion GPS’s role by the law firm.

The dossier has become a lightning rod amid the intensifying investigations into the Trump campaign’s possible connections to Russia. Some congressional Republican leaders have spent months trying to discredit Fusion GPS and Steele, and tried to determine the identity of the Democrat or organization that paid for it.

Elias and Fusion GPS declined to comment on the arrangement.

There is another question. How did it end up in the hands of the FBI?

If the WaPo is going with this story, they know it’s coming out, bigly.

As someone who knows how newsrooms work I can assure you you're right. If the WaPo was sitting on the story, they know the secret's now out and don't want to be scooped or accused of complicity.

Why is Martha Maccallum not even mentioning this on FNC??? Leads with the boring Flake rant......

The question is: did the DNC break any laws doing this? Probably NOT....sleazy, underhanded, dirty etc. Then of course, did any admin officials break any laws? Not seeing it. Just more hypocrisy.

I didn’t think this obvious fact would be disclosed by a progressive newspaper. Hilary is losing all her support. That is “What Happened”.

either you are student of history, great memory, old as mud or all the above. good job!

A limited hangout or partial hangout is, according to former special assistant to the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Victor Marchetti, "spy jargon for a favorite and frequently used gimmick of the clandestine professionals. When their veil of secrecy is shredded and they can no longer rely on a phony cover story to misinform the public, they resort to admitting—sometimes even volunteering—some of the truth while still managing to withhold the key and damaging facts in the case. The public, however, is usually so intrigued by the new information that it never thinks to pursue the matter further."

In a March 22, 1973 meeting between Richard Nixon, John Dean, John Ehrlichman, John Mitchell, and H. R. Haldeman, Ehrlichman incorporated the term into a new and related one, "modified limited hangout"

The phrase was coined in the following exchange:

PRESIDENT: You think, you think we want to, want to go this route now? And the — let it hang out, so to speak?

DEAN: Well, it's, it isn't really that —

HALDEMAN: It's a limited hang out.

DEAN: It's a limited hang out.

EHRLICHMAN: It's a modified limited hang out.

PRESIDENT: Well, it's only the questions of the thing hanging out publicly or privately.

“Maybe the Clintons have become too big a liability to the Deep State.”

Bingo. They’ve decided to take the risk that they can use the Clintons as a firebreak.

It will probably work for a while. The problem is, it will discredit them and their propaganda machine so badly, they’ll lose the power to control the news. And then they’ll lose the 2018 elections. And then they’ll lose the 2020 elections. And then they’ll lose the redistricting battles.

And at some point, all that losing will destroy the firebreak.

That is the very selfsame lawfirm and attorney (Elias) who represented Obama in all the “birther” suits. Crooked as it gets. The very bottom of the swamp, all in bed with Clinton/Obama/DNC and GOPe.

I would be writing warrants all night and the Capitol Police would be very busy in the morning. You would only have to arrest 25 or 30 folks to make the choir sing.

If anyone says the secret word tonight
the duck will fly down and pay out a hundred dollars,
thats right folks, to the first person that uses it in normal conversation.

Its a common everyday word that has been know to make politicians soil themselves on the spot.

Two thoughts:

1. This was released to weaken any court action to order release of Fusion GPS complete billing records. This means there’s something worse than this in them.

2. Mueller will indict somebody this week to give the media another story to focus on.

Bonus round: the Uranium One stuff is really really incriminating and this is a distraction. Releasing this will allow the media to mix the two “Russia” stories together and put the uranium story down the memory hole.

We know that from the lips of the person who gave it to them. After he dispatched an aide to England to pick up a copy.
