Gabon students angry over sex-for-grades pressure

In Gabon, they’re called “sexually transmitted grades” – when university teachers use the threat of giving low marks in order to coerce female students into providing sexual favors. “He started coming on to me. I began refusing him, refusing and refusing ... until the day when he gave me zero for my main piece of work,” Melanie told AFP, speaking on condition of using a pseudonym.

Another student said that she was forced to switch courses after she rejected the advances of a teacher who had “made my life hell.”

Student leader Franck Matoundou said that he had brought the problem of sexual predation to the educational authorities’ attention.

Responding to AFP, university administrative staff point to the difficulty of clearly proving cases of sexual harassment by teachers.

“If there is incontestable proof that a teacher is guilty, that person must answer for their actions,” a spokesman for the Higher Education Ministry said. “If this really happens, it is unacceptable and the government condemns such behavior,” the official added.

Disgusting.

I don’t know what the laws are like there, but he was in a position of authority over that young woman.

He needs to be fired...or maybe her father could do some street justice...

If you’re having trouble with the high school head
He’s giving you the blues
You wanna graduate but not in his bed
Here’s what you gotta do:
Pick up the phone, I’m always home
Call me anytime

[Pre-Chorus]
Just ring: 3-6, 2-4, 3-6, hey
I lead a life of crime

[Chorus]
Dirty deeds (Done dirt cheap)
Dirty deeds (Done dirt cheap)
Dirty deeds (Done dirt cheep)
Dirty deeds and they’re done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds and they’re done dirt cheap

It is considered the way of the world everywhere *but* the U.S.A.

When I was in Panama 30 years ago, if the manager of a government office did not have 3 or 5 female employees as his mistresses, you figured he was gay.

Interesting, much like at least some of the Lebanese-Italian communities in the States.

The reverse is also true. I managed to stay honest and not succumb to the many offers of favors for grades. I was 26 years old and a full time professor at a fairly large university.

There was one course I taught that was required for graduation and the students feared it, most waiting for their senior year. I was 26 and the students 22. Boy was it tempting.
