This approach is exactly what turned George W. Bush into a national laughingstock and ruined his presidency (same as his father). Amazingly, little brother Jeb doubled down on the "nice guy" approach during his cringe-worthy presidential run and got utterly destroyed.
Mitt Romney and John McCain took the same "high road" approach against Obama during their campaigns and they got clobbered as well. The Democrats play for keeps and if Republicans are going to be patsies, they will lose every time.
Even more sadly, you have the Bushes, Romney and McCain still licking the boots of the Democrats that mastered them. They are all in full Patty Hearst Stockholm Syndrome mode.
Donald Trump took a combative take-no-prisoners approach and not only did he win but he's still winning.
“The key thing here is that Donald Trump fought back. Yet I still see Freepers here constantly saying that Trump needs to “tone it down” and be above it all - be more “presidential.””

I’m not a fan of toning it down at this time. I want him to keep bending teeth.
Both Bushes, McCain and Romney were just pretending to be nice guys. They were really on the same side as the Democrats.
Importing cheap labor was what was most important.
The sad thing with W was he HAD that concept of fighting back, of not playing the media’s game. That’s how he got elected. It was when he said we are not going to talk about alcohol and drugs any more and stuck to that. Before that they were hounding him daily. Seemed like they kind of wore him down by his second term.
Great comment, SamAdams.
