The only thing I can say about that is it is more of a "don't you dare do it" threat than a "what is going to happen as times plays out" threat.
The whole purpose of Grassley's threat is to keep President Trump from firing Sessions.
However, what if, despite the threat, and due to just a worsening opinion of the President to his appointed AG, he fires him anyways?
What does Grassley and the senate do then? Keep Rosenstein as acting AG for a few years? What if Pres. Trump fires him, too? Who is next in the hierarchy?
And if the President fires the AG, and appoints another, and he/she is otherwise qualified, how long will the Senate hold out? While it is obviously true that the press is insanely anti-Trump, Trump's many millions of followers are not and Trump would not get all the blame here. Who would then win the war of opinion? After all, one could argue, the President DID fire the AG, and now we have none, and he/she who is his appointed candidate isn't a devil with horns, why is the Senate now hurting us with leaving us with no chief law enforcement director? Is this just to fulfill a grudge at our expense?
And what if Sessions behavior does go from bad to worse?
Surely the President can replace him, or, if not, then the Senate has usurped the President's authority.

Trump doesn't have to fire Sessions. He offered his resignation. Sessions has too much integrity to stay in office if Trump no longer has confidence in him.

Trump will live with the consequences. Will Steven Miller remain on his staff if his mentor is fired? What will be the reaction of conservatives in general if the most prominent conservative in his administration is fired? What is the reason given for his removal? How does this affect issues like immigration enforcement?

Depends on the nominee. It also depends on who controls the Senate in 2018. The GOP could lose its slim majority.

It depends on who is the nominee and the reason for the dismissal of Sessions. Sessions received one Dem vote during his confirmation process--Joe Mancin. Will Trump appoint someone who can get more Dem votes?
Rosenstein was confirmed 94-6. The senators voting against Rosenstein’s confirmation were all Democrats: Cory Booker (N.J.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Kamala D. Harris (Calif.), Catherine Cortez Masto (Nev.), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (Conn.) He would be acting AG.

I don't share your assessment that Sessions' "behavior" has been bad. I am very pleased with his performance as he restructures DOJ and re-institutes the Rule of Law.

No one disputes that. But the Senate has a constitutional role in the confirmation process. I suspect that no matter who Trump appoints to replace Sessions will be controversial. It will be a long, difficult process.

Sessions, if you will remember, is MY senator (Alabama) and I not only voted for him enthusiastically, I know him, met him at several venues (especially during campaigns) and really love the guy.
But he has deeply disappointed me. And not only me, but most FReepers. I expected SO MUCH MORE from him. I really did.
If The President and Jeff are playing some game to fool their opponents in the deep state, then it's the best game ever in history.
But let's use Occam's Razor. The reason Hillary and Obama are not being prosecuted for what is apparently a crime, while on hand we have a special counselor investigating a situation where NO CRIME has even been assigned shows me and people like me that the government we expected is being thwarted, and moreover allowed to be thwarted by that same government.
I voted for Trump to clean up the country. That didn't mean letting these blatant crimes of the Clintons simply walk and not be further investigated.
If that is the case, and Jeff told Jason Chavetz, Congressman and chairman of the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the very same, then why anyone of us should be prosecuted for any crime is a travesty!
Unless I see otherwise, Sessions is presiding over the end of the rule of law.

I lived in Huntsville, Al in the mid/late 1980s. This was the beginning of the turn from Yellow Dog Dem/Commie to RINO Republican - maybe better than Yellow Dog Dem but still with that mentality.
Jeff Sessions was of this group - He was a protege or at least on good terms with Howard Hefflin. Now Sessions is an OLD man and maybe he no longer has what it takes to return America to a Constitutional Republic.
During Session's long presence in D.C., all of the institutions that are now strangling us have grown bigger and bigger and Sessions did nothing to stop this monstrous power grab by the elite bureaucracies that inhabit D.C.
Just one example - Military base closings - The congress passed the buck to commissions to determine which local military bases were to be closed and where to consolidate what is left.
Abrogation of responsibility on the part of the Congress continues today - BLUE SLIP for Judicial nominees, 60 votes for Cloture - Non of these are in the Constitution.

How do you know that there is no ongoing investigation of the Clintons and their Foundation? Or the unmasking scandal?
The special counsel is supposed to be investigating Russian influence in our elections along with alleged collusion between the Russians and the Trump campaign. The Steele dossier and the Comey firing are fueling this farce. Putting an end to it is very difficult politically.

I don't think that is the case and I don't believe Chavetz who is a weasel. He is not a big fan of Trump. And I have some real questions as to why he abruptly left Congress. I smell a rat.

Sessions is restoring the rule of law that ended during the Obama administration. Bush wasn't much better than Obama when it came to the enforcement of our immigration laws.

All I can say Cousin Mike is I hope you are right.
Because I have very mixed emotions about AG Sessions.
First, it didn’t help that Trump was so damn angry at the guy for recusing himself so quick like he did.
Now we hear mostly nothing except how Mueller is appointing a Clinton cavalcade and we have to stand by and watch?
However, I don’t think the Justice department is standing quite so silently as we might believe.
There is more to this story than we know, more to the unmaskings, more to the Iran deal, more to the Gitmo releases.
I think it’s all about the money.
Your comment about Chavetz is interesting. I think he left congress so he could get a talk gig on Fox. Using Occam’s Razor as you suggest.

One of the problems you have with acting, radio,tv,newspapers etc. is that there is a huge line of people willing to do it for free.
Getting paid in any of these jobs requires a good bit of talent.
Rosenstein looks pretty good on paper. You have to dig deep to discover that with the people he has been around you don’t last unless you have been compromised.
I have no idea if Fitton could or is the right man for the job. Just wound up asking one day,who could replace Sessions if it came to it and his name came up.

If I recall one of the problems you have with Sessions is that he was loyal to Trump when few were.It was after the left had released an enormous dump of bad stuff on him during the campaign. Most everyone was down on Trump except for Sessions.If I recall Sessions had his pick of jobs. He chose DOJ. Just goes to show only one person should be picking and no one else.
Interesting fact: Both Robert Mueller and James Comey have served as Deputy Attorney General in addition to their FBI work.
Right. Quid pro quo is usually proven by inference and circumstantial evidence. Bribery is done on the sly; covertly. Put the time line, money transfers, and facts before a jury and you get a slam-dunk conviction if an untainted jury and judge
