Barry Mann: "Who Put the Bomp?"

Barry and his wife Cynthia were one of the most prolific of the Brill Building writers. One of their classics was "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling." This song was written by Mann with Gerry Goffin, who was Carole King's first husband and writing partner.

Lesley Gore: "She's a Fool"

If you're going to do some doo-wop, you can't leave out "shack-a-dula," the silly male chorus line to this song.

The Marcels: "Blue Moon"

This may be the ultimate doo-wop treatment of a classic. That's Rodgers & Hart getting turned on its head.

That is, without a doubt, the best use of shack-a-dula that I’ve ever heard.

And I’ve heard it a lot.

The Flamingos: "I Only Have Eyes for You"

Harry Warren's two-step from the Warner Brothers musicals era gets the she-bop-she-bop treatment in a mysterious version.

The Silhouettes: "Get a Job"

Back the Fifties, one of Steve Allen's best routines was to recite the lyrics of this song as though it were to be taken seriously.

Nowadays, the version everybody remembers came from 1958 with a pseudo-Glenn Miller backing.

The Five Keys: "Ling Ting Tong"

The roots of doo-wop go back to pure R&B. This 1955 entry from Ahmet Ertegun's Atlantic label attempts to pass doo-wop off as pseudo-Chinese. I know of people who will still swear that there is something dirty hidden in the lyrics.

Yeah, but by then I was almost 6 years old! LOL!

Jo Soafford had a wonderful voice, BTW!

We must be about the same age.
She was Sergent York’s cousin.

The Cadillacs: "Speedo"

This 1955 song, which straddles rock and R&B, shows how early rock and roll was simply the blues speeded up. To keep the musical line together, the bass man sang "wop-wop-did-a-dip," which disguised the fact that the lyrics were just the usual three lines of the blues.

Hard to fathom that WW1 was 100 years ago, and I still know who Sgt. York was.

But I wonder if the kids today know?

If they watch TCM, they do. It’s one of Gary Cooper’s best films.
