An improvised explosive device was detonated around 5 p.m. Thursday in a parking lot located at the intersection of South Boundary Street and Francis Street near Merchants Square, according to Williamsburg Police.
No one was injured, according to Williamsburg Police spokesman Maj. Greg Riley.
The parking lot is across Francis Street from Berrets Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill. Across from South Boundary Street from the parking lot is the College of William and Mary campus.
The Williamsburg police and fire departments responded to what was initially reported as a car fire, Riley said.

Merchants Square is pedestrian mall in the area between Colonial Williamsburg and William & Mary University. There are a lot of people who hang out there.

Why do they not use that old and honorable term, “A bomb?” It uses less space and is just as descriptive. If one must be “hip” then call it an IED. Anyone who doesn’t know that acronym yet won’t understand the report anyway.
Likely because the term 'bomb' is more headline gathering than 'large firecracker' or 'M80'. In this day where anything larger than a ladyfinger firecracker is called an IED, it makes the faux newz easier to sell.
