Was it THE BLUE KNIGHT from the 1970s? The original TV movie of THE BLUE KNIGHT pilot show had William Holden in the lead. George Kennedy was then lead in the series.

Yes that is it...I am now thinking it was Holden that did the ‘phone trick’... Holden could ‘pull that off’ better than Kennedy....ha ha
