Thank you for your service and your recollections. I do think that McCain left something of himself behind in the prison camp and brought ghosts with him.
I have always, even now, been a bit reticent about criticizing him at all for that...I can’t bring myself to do it. Reading Admiral Stockdale’s book “In Love and War” I came to recognize that they all recognized that each man had a limit, and that varied widely from person to person, so they tried not to judge others on that.
I wasn’t there, so...I just don’t feel I can comment on it at all, and leave it up to his comrades there to criticize him on the basis of what happened that they knew about, since they understood the context.
But boy, do I ever condemn him for his conduct after the war. I detest it.
