Idiots! In the Civil war, most of the plains tribes, from Mexico to Canada, went to war against the UNION and had Southern sympathies. Most of them made separate treaties with the Confederacy. Only the Pawnee, Crow, Yakaton Sioux and a small number of the other tribesmen split off and remained loyal to the North.

One of the reasons the Indians fare so poorly in our history includes the fact that just about every time there is a conflict, they choose the losing side. In the French & Indian War, most sided with the French. In the Revolution, most tribes favored the British. They also favored the British in the War of 1812 and during the Civil war most favored the South. I understand why they chose as they did, but backing the loser usually does one no good.
