I appreciate the attempt to clarify what’s going on there. Hey you may be right.
With the smile, it looks like a sarcastic wiping of fake tears, and the public has bought in 100%.
Whatever the initial intent, it’s a real hoot to see this when fake tears and a big smile are called for.

Yes, it does.
When you’re roasting someone, you can use wide latitude in the lampoon.
Have you see folks express playing the world’s smallest violin, when someone is tying and failing to get sympathy?
Does that look like a real violin? Of course not. It’s a lampoon and there is wide latitude in the presentation.
