Eastern Illinois University’s ‘Lincoln Hall’ eyed for name change

The “Lincoln Hall” dorm at Eastern Illinois University may be renamed because its counterpart at the school — “Douglas Hall” — has come under fire.

The university’s faculty senate recently passed a resolution calling on campus leaders to consider renaming the two dorms because Stephen Douglas, a Democrat, famously advocated for slavery against Republican Abraham Lincoln in a series of debates.

They could just add an S to the name and then it would be named for Frederick Douglass.

During the 1860 campaign, when Douglas realized that Lincoln was certain to win the election, he stopped campaigning for himself and devoted his efforts to persuading Southerners not to secede if Lincoln won. Not that the people gunning for him now care about any details of history.

How was Lincoln’s view of race any different from the general American population’s opinion of race in the early 1860s.

Maybe the license plates should be changed from “Land of Lincoln” to “Land of Obama”. We could compromise on “Land of Reagan”.

It wasn’t. He wanted to free and deport. Booth put an end to that.

central_va: "Lincoln was, indeed, a white supremacist. "

But when you were off your meds you claimed:

In fact, he was nothing remotely of the sort.

central_va: "Lincoln invited free Black ministers to the White House to have a conversation."

Right, he asked them which country in Africa or the Caribbean they wanted to recolonize.
They said, in effect, they wanted to stay in the US as full respected citizens and Lincoln responded, also in effect, "well, then, OK".

Nobody denies that Lincoln's views "evolved" over the years, but in the end he was responsible for emancipation & abolition, as well as Union colored regiments, all actions Confederates refused to even consider until too late.

Liberals are all for “cultural relativism” EXCEPT when it comes to judging traditional American or European cultures.

Hey general, don't pop a cork!

So, we know that Lincoln's views on race were racist if viewed through the lens of contemporary values (which is an incredibly stupid thing to do!), but his views were appreciably softer and more compassionate than any southerner of the era.

Does this mean that you are admitting that all your ancestors were racist white supremacists?

So what’s your point? Lincoln’s views aren’t in dispute and if anything favorably better than most of his contemporaries. You’re expending a lot of energy on a nothing-burger.

Your buddy BroJoe said:Total rubbish, off your meds again, are you?

For reminding everyone that Lincolns view on race align with KKK.

But they don’t. You’re ridiculously wrong to compare the domestic terrorism of the KKK to Lincoln. You should be embarrassed.

Lincoln was a man of his time, who shared in the prejudices of his day. To the extent that he didn't, he was a politician appealing to those who did share in the ideas of the era and trying to win their votes.

The more interesting question may be why Douglas was so sure that Lincoln was vulnerable on the race issue. Why was Douglas so convinced that he could paint Lincoln as a supporter of racial equality?

Was this something all Democrats did to all Republicans in 1858 -- part of the standard Democratic Party playbook? Or did Douglas detect something unreliable in Lincoln, some divergence from the orthodoxy of the time? Or was Douglas just flailing about, trying to get through the campaign and keep his head above water?

Lincoln was a racist. Which is an understatement. Lincoln was KKK Grand Wizard racist.

Vadge is very quick to play the Klan card. Sort of like a German who joined the Stasi to keep people from asking what he was up to during the war. What's he trying to hide?

How do General. But Mr. Lincoln did free them black folks didn’t he? How you feel about Harry Truman and LBJ? Y’all should check out what they had to say about black folks.

I should think just being himself, our own ‘’central va’’ is embarrassment enough.

Douglas and Lincoln are American history so leave it alone and start learning something other than being freaks.

central_va post #8: "Lincoln was KKK Grand Wizard racist."

central_va post #26: "The Bloody Goon’s words speak for themselves."

Funny, I always thought Alice the Goon bore a striking resemblance to your old buddy-pal Jeffybo Davis.
I mean, why else would the Ku Klux Klan wear dresses & bonnets except to honor ol' Jeffybo?
