Watch as Berkeley firefighters arrived in Santa Rosa, stunned by scope of Tubbs Fire

NOTICE: If you hate California and have nothing good to say, move on. You are NOT wanted on this thread. Get lost.

If you have a heart, please watch the video of the Berkeley Engine 6 firefighting team helping out in Santa Rosa. This is heart-wrenching. There are links to contribute to those who have lost everything.

A group of Berkeley firefighters was called out to help fight the Tubbs Fire early Monday morning. They thought it was a "large grass fire," but arrived in Santa Rosa to find hundreds of homes and businesses burned. This video was taken and produced by a Berkeley firefighter.

Berkeley Fire Department received the call for help early Monday morning. They sent an engine north to Santa Rosa to help with what they thought was a "large grass fire." When the strike team, made up of both Berkeley and San Francisco firefighters, arrived in Santa Rosa before sunrise, they were stunned to see the scope of the already massive Tubbs Fire.

A video shot and edited by a Berkeley firefighter (above) shows the crew's reaction when they realized just how large the destructive fire had grown overnight. As the engine headed toward the Santa Rosa Kmart store where they were told to assemble, the firefighters could see flames in the hills. "Wow, those are coming out of the structures," one firefighter says. "Oh my god." A few seconds later, someone says, "It's starting to smell like houses burning."

The Tubbs Fire destroyed more than 2,800 homes, 400,000 square feet of commercial space, and took the lives of at least 19 people.

The fire was 60 percent contained Sunday morning.

That’s the way it’s been and will continue to be.

"The Control of Nature" by John McPhee offers some good perspective on this.

Environazis have hugely contributed to the horrendous infernos that happen now. They and their pet legilstaors, lawsuits and so on.

Hopefully the new heads of the Interior, BLM and USFS will change policies.

We gave Trump his third largest number of votes. If the Bush No Borders wing of the GOP hadn’t done their damnedest over the years to flood California with future Democrats maybe we wouldn’t be outvoted.

Good point!

I have family all up and down the coast, all CONSERVATIVES—eh a libertarian or two—they are not leftists! Some have been there for years...My aunt and some cousins over 50 years~long before Jerry Brown and the illegals and leftists had overrun the coastal cities!!

Good post, D1.

They didn’t talk politics, the strike team was trying to prevent further loss of property and did.

And it was arson in TN. I keep looking and still the cause of the CA fires is listed as unknown. There was no lightning that night. And PG&E power lines going down might or could have caused some of them, but not all. Not possible, plus there have been reports of people starting fires that night.

It is interesting howpeople lash out when called upon to be responsible.

Tell us all what you personally do to get reasonable fire policies implemented in California between fire seasons.

You know, like in other states.

So this won’t be as devistating each time.

The “are you drunk” dodge is just as stupid as the “haters” dodge, but at least it is different.

People are going to say what they’re going to say.

Putting a notice at the top of the thread, warning others to refrain from making negative comments, only invites negative comments.

It’s a challenge that WILL be answered, whether you like it or not.

Sadly you may be right...However,

Whether or not I like it...it was mot up to me...This not the thread I posted, and I did not put a caveat up on the one I did post...

I just think the nasty bitter posters make Freepers and Free Republic look just as bad as the leftists they rail against...You know, the leftist who were gleeful that it was a Country Western Concert that was the target of the attack in Los Vegas...leftists said they were relieved that the concert goers were White Trump voters—leftists actually said that...They also said that about type of stuff about Houston...

So, again, if people wish to challenge, they look like selfish bitter, and small-minded people...reminds me of Westboro Baptists, and they hurt conservatism and Free Republic as well as themselves...

This was a housing sub-division, where 100s of homes went up in flames. The clowns here just couldn’t take a pass. Shameful.

Oh, I completely agree. I battled that sort of mindless, heartless, anti-Cali hate for years, here and elsewhere. Still do sometimes, but now I battle anti-Texas bigotry too.

I can only imagine how New York Freepers must feel.

I agree. It's a point I've found myself making many times, when going toe to toe with Cali haters.

We're supposed to be better than the left.

“May I post a link to your thread from mine?”

Of course...please do.

Thanks for the comments, too. Very well put. I’m very glad we have many kind, sympathetic people on this thread expressing their sorrow, horror, and grief. As you and others have pointed out, there have been many disasters this year. The fires in the West were burning strongly in 12 states in late August and early September - people all over the west were burned out and suffering. I have nothing but compassion for them as well as tremendous respect for the men and women who work the very hard and dangerous fire fighting jobs to keep us all safe.

I’m 75 miles SSW down on the peninsula. The smoke was really bad Tuesday or Wednesday - visibility was probably below a half mile. It’s good now. No matter how bad it was here, I always remind myself what it’s like to be in Napa, Sonoma or Lake Counties facing disaster.

I read about the average age, too. That is so shocking and sad — people who have no communications, no loved ones nearby to assist, and often no transportation. Words fail me thinking about what they faced in such circumstances.

All of us Californians are really sick of the California-bashing here on FR. We don’t bash other states.

It really is a crying shame. There are millions of decent, conservative patriots still living in California, but the haters give them no bonus points for standing their ground against the virulent left.

No, if you're from California, you must be a commie lib, an empty headed pawn of the left, or you're some kind of phony 'conservarive', it's pretty infuriating at times.

Seriously?? What happened had nothing to do with managing its resources—obviously you have not been paying attention..

what’s burning is not brush, and houses too close together? There are wide well maintained firebreaks which have been used to contain the fires? Well all righty then. If this ended days ago (which is what happens with proper resource management ) then why is this thread still going on?

Do you think they built Arby’s, McDonald’s, K-Mart, the Hilton, the Sonoma Hotel too close together and on brush? Do you think Vineyards are built too close together and on brush? Many subdivisions throughout the country have homes that are built close together—typically subdivision yards don’t have lots of dry brush—they have lawns, swing sets, pools, and flowers.

With all due respect, you may have seen that this tragic event is still on going, but I don’t think you have really been paying attention to what is truly going on...

Most fires MAY have ended days ago with proper resource management, but this is not most fires...Theses fires started simultaneously in middle of night in multiple locations with 70 MPH winds...and some in the flat residential areas in the valley...actually many questions are swirling about exactly how this fire started.

I think it is way too soon to start assigning blame...Better response is to support those who have lost friends, family, and property in any way they can—thoughts and prayers, a donation, or just a kind word of empathy.
