As Congress contemplates the next step for children who immigrated to this country illegally, a population of young immigrants who entered America legally is beginning to speak out.
Not covered by the proposed DREAM Act, not eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, these children are unlike any other class of immigrants and probably have no chance to stay in the country as adults unless the federal government clears a decades-long backlog of applications.
Nicknamed H-4 Dreamers, the children were brought to America from India with their parents on H-4, or dependent, visas. Until they turn 21, their status is the same as that of their parents, so if their parents become citizens, they do as well.
Many parents take this approach, coming into the country for a short period on an H-1B visa as a skilled worker and then applying to stay on an immigrant visa.
Thats usually not a problem, unless the family is from India, where theres a 70-year wait for immigrant visa status because of a large number of qualified applicants.

The children of Indian immigrants are some of the smartest, most talented and entrepreneurial people in America
They are an asset to this country and they should be allowed (encouraged) to stay.
I agree...give them 6 months...starting TODAY!
Meanwhile, in NJ, the mostly Indian & Asian school board just ended the football program. Why? The school can’t field a competitive team because all the kids are to skinny and small. The tennis team is very competitive.
Why break up the Families? Send the whole Family back.
I'm glad to hear that. Much easier to find and deport that way.
True. I have family in Pa. and ALL 7-11’S in his area are Punjabi clerks. The locals call them Apu’ like the Simpsons character.
“Skilled” Indian workers.... good one.
H4 visa holders were not allowed to work until Obama signed an Executive Order decreeing it so.
temporary is temporary. whoever has overstayed visa or were brought here as children by parents who overstayed all got to go.
Had they been wise they would have applied for citizenship before visa expired or very soon after.
They wanted all they could take from USofA without having to truly become a part of USofA shows they have no love for the country, only the perks.
Tough to get people to manage a convenience store. 90 hour weeks, clear perhaps $50K/yr, and risk getting shot in the face every night.
The problem is that people from India do not meet any of the qualifications to immigrate to the US. They are educated, speak English, work for a living, pay taxes, get married, avoid crime. They need to start protesting and bombing, and they will get put to the top of the list.
It was unlimited until. TRUMP !
If they’re so talented, how come India is such a mess that they couldn’t wait to come here?
Almost all Indians are here legally......this is fake news
The article doesn’t infer they are not here legally. This article is specifically about people who are temporarily here legally who don’t want to leave when their time is up.
> They are legal immigrants.
No they’re not.
They are legal skilled MIGRANT workers with no intention of becoming citizens.
When the work is over, they and their kin need to leave CONUS.
