Maher wouldn’t make good rat bait. Even a pig would turn up his snout at him.

He has clearly never read the debate on the Fourteenth Amendment, nor the Dred Scott decision. The Democrats (EVEN BACK THEN!) didn't want the Negroes (as they were called then) to own guns. They did NOT want 2nd Amendment rights for blacks, whereas gun-rights advocates such as myself DO want blacks to be able to own guns.
But we all knew Maher was ignorant.

Gun control was enacted by Democrats after Reconstruction to prevent blacks from defending themselves from the KKK arm of the Democrat party. You said it more succinctly than I did.

On Real Time on HBO, liberal host Bill Maher was again hitting the issue of race from the left as he promoted claims that the purpose of the Second Amendment was to help keep the slave population under control, rather than to give the population a right to self-defense.But wasn't it the Democrats who fought to keep blacks from having guns during reconstruction so as to keep them from demanding their rights? Awkward.

Publicly and loudly declare your house(s) and your person and your family to be "gun free zones" and we *might* take you seriously on the Second Amendment.
Until then you're just another lyin' showbiz phony.

And just where did Garry Wills get his evidence from
Such nonsense keeps being spewed

Maher is a moron, true, and an uneducated one at that. The Bill of Rights was ratified together. So what the idiot is claiming is that the Bill of Rights was ratified to maintain slavery. Shows how totally ignorant he is about our nation’s founding.

If they come for our guns and you turn yours over shame on you.

exactly correct. He tries to go to another tired argument about the types of weapons we have today. Muskets were certainly military grade weapons back them and they were owned by the military and private citizen alike. It was the parity I believe the founding fathers intended. We aren’t even at that parity any more...gun control is pushing citizens back to having no more than sling shots. How is a single shot gun any match to what our military has today? It is no match...we’d have a hard time pushing back against our government today. We should be allowed to have exactly what the military has or we do not have parity.

In the case of Maher, it’s the other end of the jackass that does the talking.

The cotton gin, which led to an exponential increase in cotton production and thus the expansion of southern slavery, was not put into production until a few years after Washington became America’s first president.
To: drewh
The 2nd was not needed to enforce slavery when there was slavery. The Constitution did not apply to non free people. After the war it was ruling class Southern whites who did their best to get around the 2nd because they were afraid the new Citizens would feel actually independent. They also feared an uprising. The South had more Infringements in law than the rest of the country, at least until the Sullivan Law in New York.
