Columbus descendant pens op-ed defending Columbus legacy
THE HILL ^ | 10/09/2017 | BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY

A descendant of Christopher Columbus penned an op-ed published Monday defending Columbus's legacy.

In the op-ed published in USA Today — titled "Hey America, my ancestor didn't cause your failings" — Christopher Columbus XX wrote that history has some "truly evil people," but his ancestor is "not one of them."

"Most often, history is not made up of perfect people and evil ones, but of complex people who must be understood in context," he wrote.

"What is happening at the hands of Columbus’ detractors is political, not historical. As his direct descendant and namesake, I should know." "What is happening at the hands of Columbus’ detractors is political, not historical. As his direct descendant and namesake, I should know."

Columbus XX wrote that blaming his ancestor for everything that went wrong when two cultures met for the first time in 1492 "hides the truth about him" and "obscures the great things that the countries of the American hemisphere have accomplished."

Columbus XX said Columbus did "something incredible" by reaching the Bahamas on board three small ships.

"Those who now question Columbus conveniently ignore the fact that slavery, cannibalism, warfare and even human sacrifice all existed in the Americas before he even sailed," he wrote.

"Even so, some today blame Columbus for everything they dislike in U.S. history, despite the ample evidence that he was a moderating force on his men, and the fact that he sought to keep good manners and friendly relations with Native Americans."

Columbus XX continued to tout the accomplishments of his ancestor, saying blaming Columbus "does his legacy a terrible injustice" and focuses people's anger "on the wrong man."

He argued that an "all-or-nothing view of history polarizes everything."

A refutation of his article by SALON, is written here:

The title:

Christopher Columbus’ descendant butchers history in op-ed:
Christopher Columbus XX is defending his ancestor from criticism — but doesn’t address some key issues

Los Angeles just deleted Columbus Day in favor of "indigenous people's day"

This is what they want to celebrate, what the left believes is far superior to Western Civilization:

Indian immigration was like ours, open borders. Had they killed all people as they arrived or required they become indians things would be different.

Open borders people are like the indians of old.

RE: Los Angeles just deleted Columbus Day in favor of “indigenous people’s day”

Question to Los Angeles — If you want to have an “indigenous people’s day”, go ahead and have it. But why do it by deleting an existing day honoring Columbus?

WHY CAN’T WE HAVE BOTH?

What’s to defend?

The Pre-columbian Americas were (for the most part) either primitive or barbaric.

Or both primitive and barbaric.

Amazing how so many of the people who object to Columbus Day are still here.

If the US is so suck, they should renounce their citizenship and return to where their ancestors originated.

If Columbus hadn’t come here, someone would have. If not the Europeans, the Chinese. Does anyone believe that the Indians would have fared any better under Chinese domination?

Let’s say that no one ever came here, and the natives were allowed to remain in control here. What would it be like? They had been here for thousands of years, yet they hadn’t even invented the wheel, and lived in huts or teepees, and were largely a hunter gatherer society. They would probably have made little progress, and may very well have died out all on their own.

RE: Columbus XX? Is he a rapper?

Humor aside, according to the USA TODAY article, Christopher Columbus XX is the Duke of Veragua, and a biographer of his ancestral namesake.

As per Wikipedia,

The Duchy of Veragua (Spanish: Ducado de Veragua) was a Spanish hereditary domain created in 1537 in the reign of King Charles I in a small section of the territory of Veragua (Gobernación de Veragua, which had been created in 1502 and extended along the Caribbean coasts of present-day Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama as far to the east as the Río Belén). The first Duke of Veragua was Admiral Luis Colón y Toledo, grandson and heir of Christopher Columbus. The establishment of the duchy was the resolution of a longstanding dispute between the Spanish Crown and the heirs of Columbus, who had claimed a greater area.

RE: Does anyone believe that the Indians would have fared any better under Chinese domination?

Very hard to speculate.... We can only answer that in hindsight and ask ourselves how those that came under Chinese influence in the past have fared -— Tibetans, Koreans, etc.

RE: The problem is that the lefties never let the FACTS stand in their way.

If you read his article here:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2017/10/09/christopher-columbus-xx-my-ancestor-wasnt-evil-column/744333001/

You will see that this man has no love for Anglo Saxons.

Here is one paragraph in his article:

“it was the white Americans who, after gold was discovered, decimated the population from 150,000 to 30,000, murdering four in 10 of those who died after 1845. “

If it wasn’t for Columbus, there wouldn’t be a Columbia which supplies liberals their cocaine.
