N. Korean workers prepare seafood for U.S. stores, restaurants

HUNCHUN, China >> The workers wake up each morning on metal bunk beds in fluorescent-lit Chinese dormitories, North Koreans outsourced by their government to process seafood that ends up in American stores and homes.

Privacy is forbidden. They cannot leave their compounds without permission. They must take the few steps to the factories in pairs or groups, with North Korean minders ensuring no one strays. They have no access to telephones or email. And they are paid a fraction of their salaries, while the rest — as much as 70 percent — is taken by North Korea’s government.

This means Americans buying salmon for dinner at Walmart or discount supermarket chain ALDI may inadvertently have subsidized the North Korean government as it builds its nuclear weapons program, an AP investigation has found.

I check all fish that I buy to make sure it does not come from China. I even don’t like buying fish from Indonesia or Vietnam.

I’ve known about this for years. It isn’t common knowledge?

I love seafood but I don’t buy ANYTHING from Southeast Asia. Especially China. They farm raise a lot of it, but don’t clean the water. Instead they just pump it full of industrial antibiotics, which is what you get when you eat it.

"I’ve known about this for years. It isn’t common knowledge?"

You are dealing with a consumer population that thinks
a "Dorito" is a Mexican vegetable that grows on a vine.
(And that they make the hot and spicy ones
by cross breeding them with Jalapenos.)

That’s it. No more seafood from these places. Buy American or Canadian beef or fish (Canada produces a lot of shrimp and salmon).

Remember a few years back, some dog food processed in China was making dogs sick? IFRC...

Just stop giving them money. And especially not to NK.

Our President is right: Buy American. Period.

Although I must say, upon re-reading the article, I feel bad for the workers.

Still, any food produced from there is not to be trusted.

Which is going to turn into a major problem. Antibiotics won't work anymore and we will be reduced to the turn of the 20th century.

My dad was a lawyer and had doctor friends; he would call them up whenever he had a cold and ask for antibiotics, which they gave him. He stopped taking them as soon as he felt better....

He ended up with MRSA and was in a coma for six weeks; nothing could treat him. He lost a lot of his mental acuity because of this practice.

Antibiotics are not to be trifled with. My father died because of this.

Those first two paragraphs read like life in any big city in the US for low wage workers.

Why is the government allowing fish to be imported from the far east? These fish are bred in the most unsanitary fish farms.

It,s particularly bad because colds are caused by a virus so the antibiotic was useless

This is a Walmart hit piece.

There is no evidence that Walmart sell fish produced by North Korean workers

Why are these imports, being products of slave labor, not illegal?

Technically all imports from the third world are slave produced.

I knew Nork seafood was funneled through China, I didnt know Nork slaves were used in China. I guess I always figured that China had more than enough low paid labor to do the processing themselves.
