Tom Petty died Monday morning after life support was terminated, reports TMZ. The singer was found unconscious Sunday night after a massive cardiac arrest. Paramedics were able to restore a pulse, says TMZ, but his family accepted the inevitability of the singers death, and support was terminated this morning.

The Rock and Roller was known for his rhythmic Florida style. He was famous as early at 19. He transplanted himself to Southern California, where he was known for songs that celebrated Southern California living, such as "Free Falling."

It’s a bit surprising that of the Wilburys’ lineup, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne are the only ones left.

I listened to an interview he did years ago. One segment was growing up in Gainesville, Florida. He hated it.
Gainesville was a buttoned down, very straight laced place at the time.
One story he told was he and three of his friends running out of gas and pushing the car up a slight grade to a gas station. The station owner steps out the door and yells for them to get their hunk of junk and long haired hippy asses off his property.
Tom: “I decided then and there to leave Gainesville and never go back”.

On the same interview he tells about getting signed by a record company. The company only wanted Tom. He called them back and told them if they made it Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers they had a deal.

I heard Petty tell the funny story of how they put the band together.

Harrison came by TP’s house and said “Let’s start a band.” TP was agreeable and George picked up the phone and said he was going to call Bob Dylan to see what he thought of it.

Petty’s response: “You don’t just call Bob Dylan and ask if he wants to be in your band!”

I’ve watched that video countless times, it gets me every time.

I’m so sad about this news, I had a special ‘like’ for Petty.

Nobody will remember...

Ace (my son) and I will remember. We used to watch and enjoy his videos, even prior to MTV.

Tom Petty was a regular guy, I liked him very much, In 1985 i was working at his home in Encino doing construction on his patio, was just there for the day pumping the concrete and had no idea it was his house, at the end of the day he brought us pizza and beer and sat and chatted there was only six of us there

FWIW, it doesn’t appear he’s actually died, but in grave condition probably soon to die. According to TMZ.

I have learned to appreciate Del Shannon: very talented and underrated.

Tom Petty also once described himself in an interview as the world’s biggest Beach Boys fan. That endeared him to me.

The harmonies in Free Fallin’ actually sound like BB backgrounds.

Petty once said collaborating with Carl Wilson was one of the highlights of his career.
