If there's no record of it, I'd say there's a good chance he was using his "high stakes gambler" job description to hide his real job -- drug dealing, illegal arms trafficking, laundering money, etc.

That was a collateral thought I entertained briefly as well. Would have been easy to set him up as a lone wolf, sitting on the sideline until the police closed in. Then make it look like a suicide, and split! It is possible.

Extremely likely. Recall the out of the blue shootup of an SF law office just before Feinstein tried to outlaw assault rifles in CA.
It does not sound like an AK or AR or other rifle.
The long bursts also indicate a heavier piece of machinery than a full auto rifle.

But I’ve not gone back to study it and the video attached to the twitter feed I’m unable to open.
All I know is that nothing about this story is adding up.
I think that’s why FR and the internet are buzzing with every theory under the sun. No one can make sense of it, as there doesn’t seem to be (as yet) any logical explanation concerning this guy’s motive.
