A co-worker in the IT department where I work (I'm an infrastructure guy, he's our security engineer, so we work closely on a lot of things,) was born in Nigeria, and he was just naturalized. Everyone in our group (except me, I was out sick that day,) surprised him at the courthouse to be there for his ceremony. Incredibly sharp guy, and as you said, a hard worker. He LOVES this country, and he refuses to allow people to call him any sort of hyphenated American. He's an America who just happens to have been born in Nigeria.
That's something I've seen in a number of immigrants (REAL immigrants, not who the media claims they are,) I've known over the years. They always referred to themselves as Americans, even though they were born elsewhere. That's also the difference between the USA and any other country. It's only in America that one BECOMES American. Everywhere else, people are ex-pats... "An American in Paris." A Korean in China. But when someone becomes American, it's special.

My brother used to play some elaborate computer game where he could virtually fight the Civil War. If he was still alive I would have him place the whole Union Army on their knees, and see if that might have changed the outcome a bit.
