NFL national anthem protest denting ticket sales
CBS ^ | Sept 29, 2017 | Jonathan Berr

Operators of two of the largest U.S. ticket marketplaces say they are seeing declines in orders for NFL games amid festering controversy over the national anthem.

NFL ticket sales at TickPick slumped 17.9 percent this week compared with the prior week, their steepest decline since 2014, while sales at TicketCity plunged 31 percent. For pro football games in September, ticket sales at TicketCity are down 16 percent from a year ago. TickPick's NFL sales rose this month, but by the smallest margin since 2015. The vendors' data reflect tickets sold in the secondary market, as opposed to direct sales from NFL teams.

The slump in ticket sales underscores the pressure facing the NFL over the anthem protests, which were started last year by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The league's television ratings also appear affected, with viewership down 11 percent so far this season and some fans are calling for a boycott of the NFL's corporate partners.

"There are people who are saying that this is my form of entertainment and I don't want politics in my entertainment," said TickPick co-CEO Brett Goldberg, emphasizing that he doesn't personally share that viewpoint, in an interview.

A new poll by CBS News found that Americans are unhappy with both the protests during the anthem and President Trump's comments on the issue.

Views hinge on partisanship, but also shift with how Americans view the intentions, not just the actions, of the players and president. Most Americans say that the players' intention is to try to call attention to racism. However, Republicans also feel the players are trying to disrespect the flag and the military, too – and strongly disapprove.

Good. Any big name advertisers dropped yet?

Why is the US Military still advertising?

Don't worry, it's "just a dent":

I’ve boycotted Post cereal for 25 years. You don’t want to know how long by ban list of companies has grown to. Dozens of pages. Once on my bad list, there’s no coming off. There are plenty of alternative companies to choose from.

Sadly, it will all blow over in a week or less. Football is an addiction in this country. Just like the people who defended Tiger Woods and badmouthed his wife for his transgressions, somehow it will all turn around and people will slowly start defending those who disrespect the flag, just so they can get back to watching football.

They want to kneel or stand in locked arms?

The fans should start whistling before they come out of the locker rooms to commemorate one of the greatest train wrecks;

Appropriate, since the NFL is full of “what makes the grass grow green”.

Good. Hit them where it hurts, in the pocketbook. That is the only thing they pay attention to.

Parents who stop watching the games will pass it on to their kids as well. They’ll lose a chunk of the next generation.

I guess we just too ignorant to understand the true motives of the noble kneeler's.

Boycotts do tend to fail. This isn’t a boycott...there is no organized boycott of the NFL that I know of. It’s the suicide of a brand

No, I don't think so, this was a long time coming.

The NFL continues to advocate Left wing causes, and the game is getting worse and worse.

“...amid festering controversy over the national anthem.”\

There is nothing controversial about our national anthem and the only thing festering is the racism of the black “protesters”.

Millionaire football players taking income away from all the regular people who work in the industry, in the name of “equality”.

That’s messed up.

I just received this from a retired military veteran who served in Nam. I just forwarded it to my email list and asked that they do the same:

TAKE A KNEE! My honor to pass this on!

Take a little trip to Valley Forge in January. Hold a musket ball in your fingers and imagine it piercing your flesh and breaking a bone or two. There won’t be a doctor or trainer to assist you until after the battle, so just wait your turn.Take your cleats and socks off to get a real experience. Then take a knee.

Then, take one at the beach in Normandy where man after American man stormed the beach, even as the one in front of him was shot to pieces...the very sea stained with American blood. The only blockers most had were the dead bodies in front of them, riddled with bullets from enemy fire.

Take a knee in the sweat soaked jungles of Vietnam. from Khe San to Saigon...Anywhere will do. Americans died in all those jungles. There was no playbook that told them what was next, but they knew what flag they represented. When they came home, they were protested as well..and spit on for reasons only cowards know.

Take another knee in the blood drenched sands of Fallujah in 110 degree heat..Wear your Kevlar helmet and battle dress. Your number won’t be printed on it unless your number is up! You’ll need to stay hydrated but there won’t be anyone to squirt Gatorade into your mouth. You’re on your own.

There’s a lot of places to take a knee Americans have given their lives all over the world. When you use the banner under which they fought as a source for your displeasure, you dishonor the memories of those who bled for the very freedoms you have. That’s what the red stripes mean. It represents the blood of those who spilled a sea of it defending your liberty.

While you’re on your knee, pray for those that came before you, not on a manicured lawn striped and printed with numbers to announce every inch of ground taken...but on nameless hills and bloodied beaches and sweltering forests and bitter cold mountains every inch marked by an American life lost serving that flag you protest.

No cheerleaders, no announcers, no coaches, no fans...just American men and women...delivering the real fight against those who chose to harm us...blazing a path so you would have the right to “take a knee.” You haven’t an inkling what it took to get you where you are...but your “protest” is duly noted. Not only is it disgraceful to a nation of
real heroes, it serves the purpose of pointing to your ingratitude for those who chose to defend you under that banner that will still wave long after your jersey is retired...

If you really feel the need to take a knee, come with me to church on Sunday and we’ll both kneel before Almighty God. We’ll thank him for preserving this country for as long as He has. We’ll beg forgiveness for our ingratitude for all He has provided us. We’ll appeal to Him for understanding and wisdom. We’ll pray for liberty and justice for all...because He is the one who provides those things. But there will be no protest. There will only be gratitude for His provision and a plea for His continued grace and mercy on the land of the free and the home of the brave. It goes like this...

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I would like to add my own thoughts to this. Anytime Americans are surrounded by their enemies, the sight of the American flag and the US military coming to their rescue with reinforcements is like a gift from God. An American flag coming to your rescue is the most glorious sight to see as you whisper to yourself “Thank you God.!!!”
