Stabenow: ‘Kid Rock might actually win the Republican primary’

By Judy Kurtz - 09/28/17 04:25 PM EDT

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) is fundraising once again off a potential matchup against Kid Rock, saying if the musician makes a run for her Senate seat, he “might actually win the Republican primary.”

A Thursday email to supporters from Stabenow’s 2018 reelection campaign touts a poll that “shows Debbie beating Kid Rock in a hypothetical head to head — but it also shows something else: A full one-third of Michigan voters are ready to back him should he decide to get in the race.”

The poll released last week from Market Research Group on the potential Senate showdown found that Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, trailed Michigan’s senior senator 52 to 34 percent.

The same poll found sixty-six percent of Republicans would support Ritchie in the 2018 race.

“It's a big number and a reminder about how unpredictable 2018 is going to be,” Stabenow says in her fundraising pitch. “With Republican support so high, if he decides to get in the race, Kid Rock might actually win the Republican primary.”

The “All Summer Long” singer has flirted for months with a possible Senate run, hawking “Kid Rock for U.S. Senate” t-shirts and criticizing Stabenow, saying Americans were “sick and tired” of “bullsh--” from politicians.

Pretty good campaign platform right there.

I was at his concert a couple of weeks back, the opening event of the new Red Wings arena. He could sell-out a concert every day of the week. The place was full.

I wouldn’t want to be competing with somebody that can draw that many. He also had a podium during the show and gave a speech - one that FReepers would all have enjoyed.

I’m not sure if he’s really serious. If he is, I think he’ll win.

Beats the day when a rocker is a better choice than Stabenow . . . but in this case, my pet rock has more credibility.

Did she ask her supporters if they wondered why she wasn’t leading by fifty points?

I know nothing about this guy except what I've seen on FR recently.

A cow turd would be a better choice than Stabenow.

The question is could the democrats record 100,000 more votes out of Detroit than there are voters?

I don't think anyone is under the delusion that Kid Rock is "classy".

Whatever else he may be, he would be an improvement over Debbie Stabenow.

The GOP has a very big tent. It’s not a coincidence the mascot is an elephant. :)

I don’t know much about KR but I’m a little concerned that this might be a slippery slope of electing celebrity politicians, a little too Idiocracy for me. I know The Kid isn’t an idiot, quite the contrary but what next, Oprah or George Clooney thinking they could get elected? The scary thing is maybe they could. I dunno.
