No it shouldn’t be discontinued, but perhaps not played at every game
FTR, it IS played on Opening Night of the Metropolitan Opera season, and also at the beginning of each monthly dinner at my cigar club.

Absolutely nothing "enforced" or compulsory is taking place, Mr. Jacoby. There is no federal, state, or local law anywhere in the country requiring this tradition take place, and no football player or civilian has ever been arrested or taken away and shot for refusing to stand to honor it.
It's all an entirely voluntarily tradition, like putting up a Christmas tree or taking part in parades, fireworks displays, and barbecues on Independence Day.
For International Matches, like during the World Cup, they will play the anthems before the game. For the UEFA Champions League, which involves professional clubs, they play the Champions League Anthem before the game.
Why not have the anthem and give up the ritual of paychecks for the players.
Wrong, Jeff.
As your article points out, it is played because it is very popular. Case closed.
Hey you, the author has a right to his opinion, whether you like it or not.
You make an excellent point.
“A compelled show of patriotism ...”
Is it compelled? A team and league decide what goes on on the field.
Personally, I like having the National Anthem played before games.
“Please rise for your National Anthem”... is the way, I recall hearing this at sporting events I have attended and I don’t recall anyone doing different from where I was in the stands.
Exactly the question on my mind.

Here you go again making assumptions of which you have no proof whatsoever.
And we’re off.......
The rap garbage is percisely what they play during basketball games. Was taken to one last year and never ever again.
Yeah, let’s don’t, Jeff.
This all started with the lie about Ferguson. And Trayvon.
The national anthem of the gold medal winner’s country or nation is always played, and should be.
Bad idea.
I don’t know about football, but baseball players ALWAYS stood for the national anthem. During day-to-day games, they stood in the dugout, which is fully visible; during playoff and allstar games, they stood on the foul lines. The post-9-11 addition was adding “God Bless America” during the 7th-inning stretch.
