President Trump Blames National Anthem Protests on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

President Trump told a gathering of the Republican Party’s richest donors at a Manhattan fundraiser that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell could have stopped players’ protests during the national anthem by suspending former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick when he first took a knee last year.

“All Goodell had to do was say there’s rules and you can’t do it, suspend him for a couple games, you would never have had this,” Trump said, citing an attendee. “Now you have this whole thing going and it’s a very dangerous thing ‘cause we cannot let anyone disrespect our country like that.”

Kaepernick began taking a knee during the singing of the “The Star-Spangled Banner” last year before San Francisco’s pre-season games, saying “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

Trump told the crowd at Le Cirque, that the league has rules and should enforce them.

“They have a rule, you can’t dance in the end zone, you can’t wear pink socks, one guy’s mother had breast cancer and they wouldn’t let him, you can’t do anything! But you’re allowed to sit down for the national anthem,” Trump

President Trump is spot on with his assessment.

Roger Goodell is all about destroying the game of football and the NFL.

You know. Kinda like Obama.

BINGO!!! Roger “Neville Chamberlain” Goodell appeased Krapernick and the league quickly lost control of the situation. Talk about selective enforcement. What all these loser players did on Sunday was against league rules. Goodell only comes down hard on teams who want to honor not denigrate LEOs.

I’m sure Goodell thought it was a good idea at the time.

Yep. Kaepernick is “patient zero” for this virus. It should’ve been nipped in the bud on Day One. The person who should have, and could have, done it is responsible.

Let’s see them call Trump racist for singling out Roger Goodell. (I know they will only focus on Kaepernick (sp?) but Trump still gets credit for blaming the white guy.)

Roger Goodell is a piece of trash!

He destroyed the NFL. The dumb@ss owners have not figured that out.

Oh well their loss. They can easily afford it.

They can easily afford it.

Unless all their net worth is tied up in that one asset - their NFL team.

Either they were afraid of seeming un-PC by correcting him, or they supported his “cause.”

Either way, they forgot who their fan base was.

Trump is correct. Goodell--knowing that the 2016 Presidential election was a highly contentious--should have squashed the protests (he had the legal right to do so because the NFL is not a government agency) back in August 2016. Instead, he let it fester and now the NFL faces a GIGANTIC PR problem that could make all the miscues the NFL had in the last few years look minor in comparison.

Tomlin and Goodel need to go. Jerry Jones should just retire or sell the team. Even if these people leave and there is genuine contrition, the NFL will never recover its lost honor.

He’s right.

For Godell to not have shut this down the day Kaepernick pulled his stunt the blame is on him. Kaepernick is a half educated angry spoiled guy with an activist America hating girlfriend. Godell gave the legitimacy instead of firing him.

Godell and many others joining in would rather deal with the backlash from the American people whom they take for granted than take a stand for what is right when that backlash will be painful

He has an opportunity to do the right thing here but he won’t take it. But it’s all on him

If Roger Goodell's liberal Republican senator father was still in the Senate, he'd have to be primaried...but he was ousted by James Buckley (and is dead now anyway).

Roger's dad never won an election to the Senate--he was appointed by Nelson Rockefeller to replace Bobby Kennedy.
