NFL national anthem flap sees Steelers coach Mike Tomlin rap Alejandro Villanueva

For Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, being “respectful of our football team” trumped the right of Steelers offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva to show respect for the national anthem.

A former Army Ranger, Villanueva was the only Steeler to break from the team's orders and come out of the tunnel Sunday in Chicago to stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner." Former senior adviser to John Kerry Mary Anne Marsh and former chief of staff to Paul Ryan David Hoppe debate controversy on 'America's Newsroom' Video Politics and sports collide as anthem protests sweep NFL

Speaking after his team's 23-17 loss to the Bears, Tomlin appeared to take a swipe at the Bronze Star recipient's decision.

“Like I said, I was looking for 100 percent participation, we were gonna be respectful of our football team,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin told the media that, prior to kickoff Sunday, the Steelers held a team meeting and decided, though not unanimously, to not come out of the locker room for the national anthem. Tomlin added the intent was to have his team focus on the game and not President Trump’s comments blasting players who chose to protest during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Hmmm. So, who violated the nfl rule book here. And does it matter? Hopefully the Stealer fans will react appropriately. Now THAT is disrespect to Mr. Villanueva.

The NFL players and coachers and owners are behaving like a bunch of babies. Mr. Villanueva stands head and shoulders above all of them!

Weird because Mr. Villanueva appears to be of hiss-panic descent thus making him oppressed too. Forget about all that West Point and medal crap.

yep, he’s the only Steeler with guts. It took guts to go against the grain of what the team decided to do.

It was cowardly, in my opinion, to hang out in the locker room until the anthem was over, and then, they can say, they avoided the whole controversy.

Wrong. They would have avoided the controversy if they were out there for the anthem, and stood in respect for the anthem.

They helped enflame the controversy by hiding from the anthem, so that they didn’t have to be seen taking sides, making a choice of which sides they are on in this controversy.

This is what needs to happen. Patriotic players need to take those who don’t honor the Anthem to task and create dissension in the locker room. If they want to bring this battle public, then let’s bring the other side into it publicly

The rules are found on pages A62-63 of the league’s game operations manual:

The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem. During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.

“Like I said, I was looking for 100 percent participation, we were gonna be respectful of our football team,” Tomlin said.

So, what does this have to do with football? Do you get paid to protest or do you get paid to win games?

I would fire them all....................except one.................
