WOW wing bar in Chalmette won't show Saints-Panthers game after 'disrespectful' player protest
The (Baton Rouge, LA) Advocate ^ | September 24, 2017 | Staff

WOW Cafe & Wingery of St. Bernard in Chalmette took to Facebook on Sunday afternoon to say it won't televise the Saints vs. Panthers game after a group of players participated in a protest during the national anthem.

"I apologize to all of our guests but we will not be viewing the Saints game today in house," the post reads. "Some of our local players chose to sit during the National Anthem, which will not be supported or praised at WOW. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you."

Lindsey Manasco, a 31-year-old manager, waitress and bartender at the Chalmette-located wingery, confirmed the restaurant's decision.

"That’s disrespectful to the United States," she told The Advocate.

Manasco said that only the St. Bernard location was boycotting the game so far, and she hadn’t heard of any other nearby businesses following suite.

The decision was ultimately made by Brooke Anastasiadis, the owner of the St. Bernard restaurant, Manasco said.

Anastasiadis was motivated in part because she wanted to show solidarity with members of the military, police officers and firefighters, all of whom are given a 20 percent discount in the store when the dine in uniform.

Manasco added that the WOW restaurant in Chalmette would continue to boycott the game “any time the Saints kneel.”

“The Saints are from New Orleans and we are at Chalmette, and we want to support them, but if they kneel or sit we are not going to show the game,” Manasco said.

She reported that a couple of tables walked out when diners learned that the game wouldn’t be shown, but that most customers “are agreeing with us.”

Ten Saints sat on the bench during the national anthem, and four more players who stood near the group in a show of support before the team's game.

Rafael Bush, Kenny Vaccaro, Chris Banjo, Sheldon Rankins, Alex Okafor, Cameron Jordan, Adrian Peterson, Alvin Kamara, Brandon Coleman and Mark Ingram all sat. Thomas Morstead, Marshon Lattimore, Craig Robinson and Coby Fleener stood nearby with hands on teammates' shoulders.

The Saints and Pelicans organizations released a statement roughly half an hour before the start of Sunday's game, saying that the comments were "disappointing and inappropriate." The statement expressed support for the players, and also expressed the team's respect for the flag and the anthem.

The Saints' decision to sit during the anthem is part of a league-wide protest in backlash to comments made by President Donald Trump this weekend.

Staff writer Della Hasselle contributed to this report.

A great reminder. I couldn’t care less about football, so I’ve been thinking that I’ve already been “boycotting” the NFL for the past couple of years.

I have been going to Buffalo Wild Wings for the computer trivia game, whether the NFL was on or not. Now I will *not* go to Buffalo Wild Wings, whether the NFL is on or not. If these kinds of stadium proxies start showing sales drops as well, Goodell might start to wise up.

For sports bars that have difficulty not showing the games, they could switch to local content during commercials denying the NFL advertisers exposure.

From the late 70s to the mid 80s, I bought football and baseball cards regularly.

I quit buying and they wound up in a box in the closet.

Fast forward to 1993 after I got out of service and I go through the closet.

They’re all gone and a bunch of other stuff was broken.

For a while, my mom did some babysitting and the little terrors apparently had free reign.

“Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think the NFL knows how much it has pissed off millions of Americans.”

Why would they know? For decades now, every abuse, every atrocity committed by American Negroes has been met by a chorus of, “Well, listen to me, Mr. Big Shot. If you’re looking for the kind of white man who takes abuse and never sticks up for himself, I’m your man. You can treat me like dirt, and I’ll still kiss your butt and call it ice cream. And if you don’t like it, I can change.”

How astounded they must be at any sign that some people oppose the destruction of our borders, our language, and our culture. The only reason any white person would object to America’s destruction, of course, is racism.

Racism: you know, when someone hates another race for their skin color, as every American Black hates every American White.

Those players are likely all retired.

No you are not wrong. They remain clueless. When their bottom line continues to erode they will then start to notice. I have refused to watch the NFL now in my 2nd season..

Wife born and raised in Chalmette...we live in Slidell, now. I am Retired Navy....Soon as I saw the Saint's today I turned TV off and chucked all my Aint’s gear in the trash....that's it....Saint's suck......if you want to read a masterpiece of BS read the owners, Benson's, statement on the matter of players’ protest.

Trump is brilliant! He's now forced all the NFL bigots out into the open...everybody knows whose who now...especially the players know.....soon there will be discord on the teams as they take sides...animosity will grow, fights, etc....can't wait for the whole stinking mess to implode

In the meantime Hillary walks around free, Obamacare is the law of the land, tax reform has hit a wall, build the wall has been reduced to repairing what’s already there and construction of a few prototypes, Russia still controls 20% of our uranium and so on and so on but millions of people are upset about what a few players were doing during the national anthem.
