Let Right-Wing Speakers Come to Berkeley? Faculty Is Divided

BERKELEY, Calif. — The class is called symplectic geometry, a high-level course in mathematics that provides elite graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley, a better understanding of, among other things, planetary motion.

But symplectic geometry will not be meeting for its scheduled session on Tuesday because the professor, Katrin Wehrheim, is one of dozens of faculty members who have canceled classes ahead of a series of scheduled appearances by right-wing speakers next week in the latest round of Berkeley’s free speech wars.

“It’s just not safe to hold class,” Professor Wehrheim said. “This is not about free speech. These people are coming here to pick a fight.”

Berkeley, which has become during the Trump presidency an ideological battleground in the national debate over free speech on college campuses, is bracing for several days of disruption when a group of conservative speakers is set to appear on campus as part of an event billed “Free Speech Week.”

Invited by a small student group calling itself Berkeley Patriot, the speakers will feature Milo Yiannopoulos, the right-wing provocateur, whose appearance on campus in February was canceled when protesters attacked the building where he was scheduled to speak.

Other speakers initially invited included Stephen K. Bannon, Ann Coulter and Mike Cernovich, a far-right blogger. However, a number of them have now said they will not appear, leaving the final lineup unclear.

Still, starting this weekend, the campus will be blanketed with hundreds of police officers carrying riot gear, a deployment that a university spokesman, Dan Mogulof, said would cost as much as $1 million. On Friday, Mr. Mogulof said that he was aware of reports that the events had been canceled, but added that the university had not heard from the student group and was proceeding with security preparations.

The Left can’t even make up their mind what they defend from moment to moment.

Free speech is great one day, and terrible the next.

In the 60s and 70s, the Left thought the First Amendment was terrific.

Now, it’s more of a bothersome nuisance.

Maybe UC Berkeley should simply be demolished.

Get one of those implosion engineers to go from building to building and level each one.

Save the library though. It’s a good one.

I am appalled that a STEM professor goes along with the cr*p. Something is very wrong with that person, and as a homage to a profession of progress, he should be exterminated by other STEM profs lest they be considered with the same lack of respect that is directed at the lib arts jokers.

Students are smarter than the administration. If a professor defends the administration, then he should resign and go teach high school.

The Administration publicized the visit by Bannon so that Antifa can prepare.

The students wanted to keep the speaker list confidential, since the students know that Antifa is waiting to prepare.

Administration is evil, selfish and fearful of losing millions of federal dollars.

Sept. 22 2017
Milo’s free speech week in Berkeley is in chaos and people are unsure if it is even going to happen. Some speaker’s have claimed that they never even got invited in the first place even though they are listed as confirmed speakers. Regardless I am en route and we will see what happens!

The Hardcore Left was NEVER FOR FREE SPEECH. It was only their speech that was untouchable. A living version of “Animal Farm”. “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others”. Orwell had the communists and their supporters pegged right to the wall.

Instead of teaching these students “math”, how about teaching them the Constitution but not by the red law professors at Bolt Hall/Law School. They’re the ones who are using the Constitution to destroy it.

Been there. Heard that. (Kunstler, Kinoy, Stavis, Weiss, Ratners, Kairys, Gary, Weinglass, Fagan, Avnet/Buchman, Rabinowitz/Standard, Falk, Emerson etc.)

The fact that the question is asked at all demonstrates how much college campuses are no longer bastions of higher learning, just bastions of Marxist/Progressive/Liberal orthodoxy and most want to keep it that way.

How dare you challenge our political orthodoxy and especially how dare you subject the students we are indoctrinating to views we don’t want them to experience. /sarc

I agree with that.

You still have to look at their main arguments.

Once they preached free speech.

Now they riot to prevent Conservatives from exercising free speech.

You are of course right, they only want rights for themselves. They only advocate for Leftist dogma. They are frauds.

This isn’t new to us, but it’s still good to touch on it once in a while.
