ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Circle K clerk who shot an accused armed robber, says she was suspended for two weeks.
Reporter Megan Cruz spoke with the clerk Tuesday afternoon. Jennifer Wertz said she's upset.
She claims robberies happen all the time and yet workers are told they can't defend themselves.
Wertz said she had her gun with her Monday because she was supposed to work until 10 p.m. She said she feels uncomfortable walking to her car at night.
Wertz put her gun in her pocket after she heard that another nearby convenience store was just robbed. She said she was not behind the counter when a man barged in with a gun.
"We are not to chase or provoke. We are just supposed to stand there and give them what they want and they leave," she said.
"So why didn't you do that yesterday?" Cruz asked.
"I'm sick and tired of being a sitting duck," Wertz said. "He pointed the gun at my face, I grabbed my gun from my pocket, I cocked it and I shot."

Yeah. If an employee should ever survive an attack and the company refused to allow them to carry, I’d hope they’d sue them back to the lemonade stand they started from.

That scenario sounds a lot like the prelude to the old Hitchcock movie called Psycho, with Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins. Except in the movie, the young girl worked for an Insurance Agent.

Might work...unfortunately since we are talking about California, they might take that to mean the right of the drug addicted to perform safe, legal connivence store robberies.

I’m glad it worked out for her, but I think it’s best to have a gun that doesn’t need to be cocked in that situation.
I do remember a fascinating San Francisco river and canyon in NM where the desert hippies used to go, maybe still go, to meet the dope growers who live in the mountains. Your company couldn’t care less about your life or your safety. They’re only concerned with profits and don’t want these petty life threatening robberies to cause them unwanted liability issues.
