I would add that, like individuals, groups have reputations which play an important role in how people view and interact with those groups.

The key is tactfully pointing out how that “group” is identified. If they self-identify their group as X having characteristics Y, note that group X has a certain reputation - and that we’re not Zist for identifying X as Y, _they_ are, and that X _earned_ that reputation objectively, not because we’re supposedly Zist.
You know, that whole “we hate racists & sexists - you white males get the f out of here you aholes!” Maybe we don’t want to be around them because...they’re racist & sexist; reputation, ya know.
