Not mad, just adventurous: Cyclist completes trip around the world in 80 days

SPIRIT OF HUMANITY   Mark Beaumont set a world record, cycling 16 hours every day on his 79-day trip through 16 countries. The hardest part of the challenge, he said, was sleep deprivation.

PARIS—As he got off his bike in front of the Arc de Triomphe, Mark Beaumont looked remarkably fresh for a man who had just cycled around the globe in less than 80 days, shattering the world record.

After pedaling for 16 hours a day through 16 countries, Mr. Beaumont arrived on Monday evening to a welcome from family and friends at the spot from which he had set off before dawn 78 days, 14 hours, and 40 minutes earlier.

The time it took him to ride his journey’s 18,032 miles “were definitely the longest two and a half months of my life,” he said. “I’ve taken myself beyond anything I’ve ever done physically and mentally.”

“He has always had an adventurous spirit,” explains his mother, Una, when asked if her boy had always been a bit mad.

Beaumont’s route led from Paris to Beijing, via Russia and Mongolia, and then to Australia and New Zealand. He cycled across Canada and the United States before flying to Lisbon and the final mountainous stage to Paris.

Like other motivational speakers, ya have to ask yourself, why in tarnation would anyone want to give you their formula or secret to getting rich?

Why can't you just feel good about someone's totally awesome accomplishments? It was a great feat, like climbing Everest. Exalted in it for all mankind. And obviously you don't understand, most people are altruistic and like to share.

So did he use SCUBA gear when crossing the great ocean expanses?

Where do these people get the money and time to peddle a bicycle around the world?

Sponsors.

And now they’re going to make this guy a hero or something?

No, this guy accomplishing a superhuman feat is going to make him a hero.

I tried to feel good about it but couldn't. It's likely because I don't see peddling a bicycle for 3 months to be an, "Awesome accomplishment". I'm sure there are many thousands of others who are more than capable of peddling a bicycle for 3 or 4 months too.

Incredible. In my younger days I did two century runs and was done in after each. The army had a,punishment in the nineteenth century where the subject was forced to sit astride a plank for a,number of hours. This guy did the same for days on end while pedaling his bike. If anybody did it to a prisoner here it would be adjudged cruel and unusual punishment.

A superhuman feat? Wow...I had no idea. I recall when I was younger I had a friend and we always competed over everything. Who could eat the fastest, spit the furthest etc. We each got speedometers one Christmas for our stingray bikes. The bet was on! Who could rack up 1,000 miles first? I think it took me about 12 days. I won. I remember thinking I should have won a medal.☺

I did 18 miles straight one time and I thought I was going to die.

Fairly broad gear range, but no real granny gear. The guy must be like spring steel.

I suspect you’ve never experienced the pain and sense of accomplishment of riding a century. Once you have, you’ll really understand and admire what he did.

Kudos to him. Endurance cycling is a beautiful sport (except when you’re doing it) and he has earned a spot in its top ranks.

Did my first century 2 summers ago. Choke and puke for the last 10 miles.

Can’t imagine doing 240 a day on 5 hours of sleep.

Riding a century? Ya mean 100 miles? See #27. And I didn't even get my picture in the paper.☺

Yes. Each was a little over 100 miles and both were over 30 years ago. Now I do it by SUV or not at all. Oh, to be young again.

The first time I tried a century I dropped out after about 70 miles. It felt like somebody was jabbing knives into my thighs.

And just think, if you had only tripled your daily distance and kept it up for another 2 1/2 months, you’d have done close to what Marc Beaumont did. On a stingray.
