The national broadcaster is advising people what to do in the event of a strike.
The South Korean and U.S. militaries are analysing details of the launch, the South's Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
It is being reported the missile flew about 3,700km and reached an altitude of 770km.
The missile is believed to have fallen int the Pacific Ocean about 2,000km to the east off Hokkaido.
However, the range the missile covered is in excess of what it would need to reach to hit the US territory of Guam.
North Korean television is also currently off air and is not expected to return until 3pm local time.
Japanese military had earlier claimed North Korea is ready to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile which could reach America or Britain.
Maniac despot Kim Jong-un had begun moving the rockets into position according to several Japanese military sources.
One of the sources says that movement of one of the launch pads was first noticed yesterday morning.

Wow. Wars and rumors of wars........
Just blow North Korea off the map and then say sorry. They can’t fire if they’re all dead.
So what does this mean?
RE: So what does this mean?
South Korea is sending a signal to Fat Kim that they are not going to just sit there and be passive targets.
it means the neocons are winning
people fire test missiles and war game all over the place all the time. it’s a non issue
Ok, thx!
I don’t remember this happening before.
Hey Trump, when you have a moment while stabbing your base in the back and caving to democrats and getting nothing in return, can you send kim a few billion dollars?
It also means that cba123’s post yesterday that NK had been seen moving mobile missile launchers around for two days or so was a very worthy observation that might give us a pretty good timeframe next time it’s seen.

Ballistic ping pong.
Trump in fact gets a great deal out of it in terms of strategy and polling. The “Trump is Hitler” is officially dead and we lose comparatively very little, since Congress was always going to pass DACA protections anyway.
He’s more famous for that single line than being a senator or POTUS candidate.
Fred Thompson: “This thing will get out of hand.....!”
And social unrest in the form of unemployment.
100%... i’d of voted for him
We have not come this far to only come this far.
I predict Trump is going to play wack a mole with both the Democrats and never Trump Republicans like small man syndrome Paul Ryan.
That was so uncalled for, so stupid, and so Democrat, I’m shocked it’s on FR.
I hope someone is keeping track of where all these missiles are being launched from and where all the mobile missile carriers are going so that the tomahawks know where to.
