Hurricane Irma Live Thread III
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.

Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

It says you “should be safe” in your high rise.

Safe and comfortable can be two completely different animals. You may be safe from drowning. But you will wonder why you are stuck in a stairwell for hours on end with howling winds and rain swirling about.

Post those upper troughs from time to time. Those are the big players.

Highly recommended map for tracking Irma. I may not be the first to say so but just in case ...

Windy.com

Click on Weather Radar to choose Wind or other parameters. The display is near real time lagging by perhaps 10 minutes or so.

haha that’s some powerful DUD. She’s getting ready to make her turn. She’s tired of Cuba!

Trump should hire Chuck Norris to blow it down to Venezuela

More like countless forecaster wannabees making stupid forecast statements and thumping their chests when one of their wild guesses (out of thirty) comes to pass. We get a bit of that here, but a magnitude of order less.

“Bridges across open water freak me out. Driving to OBX I just about freaked. My bride hates the mountain passes, so it evens out”

You are a good team-——she can drive over the water——you can do the mountain passes.

The water vapor views are the best views into what is coming down the pike, IMO.

I was watching the Duval Street webcam last night. Did so for about an hour.

It was weird to see people (although not many) walking and driving around.

I was thinking “Do these people have a plan for when the brown fecal matter hits the fan late on Saturday and Sunday morning?”

I was in Homestead, FL a year after Andrew. People were still living in tents, limited electric, piles of shredded trees and former buildings higher than you could believe, and few stores or gas stations.

Worse, insurance companies hadn’t made payments to everyone and many wrecked homes had pointed graffiti aimed at those companies. I had no idea how bad it was until I saw it by driving through it.

I’m ok in a stairwell. Cozy, some chips and salsa, radio, it’s cool. The high rise ain’t going anywhere. :)

if you lay on the floor up against the far wall or in a hall even of the high rise......it might be ok. No?

One of the hardest things I've ever done in this life, was crawling thirty feet on my belly into a full strength hurricane-force wind, to an open doorway.

If you've never experienced it, you simply can't comprehend the power of those winds. They'll kill you.

My sister and her husband have been through many hurricanes of various levels for the last 40 years. Today, she told me this one is scaring her. I know she has a lot of responsibility, but she has done all that she could to prepare. I’m sure part of it is the care she gives our elderly and frail mom. Your information on the threads has been so helpful to us. Thank you.

Your chips would get soggy in the windblown rain and your radio would short out. Doors, even metal ones, tend to start failing in 150 mph wind gusts blowing through the broken windows that made you retreat to the stairwells. But at least the salsa would be edible, if a bit watery.

I got off that plane only to see numerous aircraft on their wings. No power for the next two weeks. No showers and MRE’s.

We left everyday into town with chainsaws and water.
The airmen were doing traffic and we were cleaning up.

I got the charge of a graveyard near the Davis home and it was rough. Those trees were 150 years old.

The caretaker fed us lunch everyday. She actually put it out on the tombstones themselves. It was OK. We felt like they appreciated it. :^)
