After Siding With Dems, Trump Responds to GOP Criticism With a Reminder
Townhall.com ^ | September 8, 2017 | Courtney O'Brian

Republicans on Capitol Hill are surprised and "confounded" that the leader of their party, President Trump, sided with top Democrats in the debt ceiling debate this week, hiking it for three months.

He even earned a bit of rare praise from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Then, Trump twisted the knife even further by taking the advice of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in regards to DACA. At her urging, the president tweeted out a rather compassionate message for illegal immigrants who currently benefit from the program. They don't have to worry during the six-month delay, Trump told them.

What gives, the GOP wondered.

Trump, hearing the criticism, immediately pounced on the opportunity to send this reminder.

Republicans, sorry, but I've been hearing about Repeal & Replace for 7 years, didn't happen! Even worse, the Senate Filibuster Rule will....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 8, 2017

...never allow the Republicans to pass even great legislation. 8 Dems control - will rarely get 60 (vs. 51) votes. It is a Repub Death Wish!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 8, 2017

In other words (those that can't fit in a tweet), if Republicans failed so miserably in regards to health care - something they've been screaming about for seven years - how can they be trusted to enact meaningful tax reform and rein in our debt?

A few Republican leaders, who although admit they were taken aback by Trump's reaching out to Democrats, acknowledged that this is an OK short term solution. House Speaker Paul Ryan told the press Thursday that while not ideal, it is "perfectly reasonable and rational."

On Twitter, the president urged Republicans "to start the Tax Reform/Tax Cut legislation ASAP."

"Hurry!"

One thing I don’t like about Twitter. Doesn’t let you finish anything but a sound bite.

I love it. While it seems like it's obeying Pelosi's commands, what it really does is

tell the teachers and adults to lay off lying to the DACA kids about "pack your bags"...you're outa here.

The President read the GOP establishment the riot act:

I can and will make deals with the Democrats if you don’t get your act together.

Your failure to repeal and replace Obamacare and pass tax cuts won’t be on me.

If you make me successful, you will be successful. But if you keep thwarting my agenda, I have options.

Trump is absolutely correct here. If they can't be trusted to do something they've spent seven years promising to do, as they raised hundreds of millions of campaign dollars while making those promises, then why should he believe they'll get anything else right?

Trump's been trying to wake these a-holes up for 8 months. Maybe this is the bucket of cold water in the face they'll need to get with it.

You love Trump working with Democrats?

I prefer that Trump would ground all business to a halt if his agenda items aren't passed, and blame Congress for not passing a stand-alone Harvey bill.

I would NEVER work with cretins like Schumer and Pelosi.

The useless party is worse than useless. Bitch-slapping them shows how irrelevant they really are.

I owe them no loyalty.

That’s what makes Twitter what it is: brief comments.

Anything beyond that limit is asking the reader to take more time to contemplate a more thought-out statement, which is better handled on a forum more suited to the topic.

Twitter needs to consider themselves a “common carrier”.

Trump masterfully made Lyin’ Ryan and McTurtle look like idiots in front of the entire US (not that they needed the help).

Further, he left the backdoor open on both DACA and a future hike in the debt ceiling—Almost as if he wants to see if they’ll step on themselves again.

The smart money says that they will.

You won't get any argument from me. But you're implying that Trump needs to work with Ryan/McConnell. Who said he had to?

All I'm saying is that Trump should continue to push his agenda, do what he can through Executive Orders, and put the onus on the Republicans. The base was ready to primary a bunch of Republicans next year. Already, you had people like Dent from PA stepping down.

So instead of energizing the base, Trump's working with Schumer/Pelosi has now demoralized it. And most of the RINOs are still going to be happy with legislation because the status-quo will remain intact.

See the article I posted. The Dems are now emboldened and Schumer is going to call in his favor from Trump in December, when shortly after Sessions speech, the Dems were all but dead.

Trump's DOJ has already not decided to go after Lerner.

Look, the voters in their home districts re-elected these RINO turds time and again. We’re not going to get rid of them that way. They get voted into these leadership provisions with nearly unanimous votes by their peers (thank you Rep. Massie), because the status quo is very motivated to maintain it’s status.

We’re only going to get them out of these positions if something changes the above calculus. And one thing that will do that is if their peers have a bellyful and put a ner Speaker and Senate Leader in place. Trump is working toward that end, and in the meantime he’s able to get the upper hand in negotiations with the Dems.

Game theory 101.

Sometimes a good, swift kick in the arse is the best way to get someone moving. Sometimes it’s the only way. If Congressional Republicans are bound and determined to drag their feet to spite Trump and his voters, and to cringe like whipped pups when the Dems and media scream about something, then embarrassing the Repubs might be the only way to light a fire under them.
