Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Yes, the Chinese will build them stronger, better homes. And infrastructure and military facilities.
They can do it profitably and Cuba will become the jewel of the Chinese Empire.

Yeah, funny how climate change is “settled science” but they still can’t figure out Mother Nature.

This storm will go whatever it’s going to go. No amount of money or signed agreements will stop the inevitable. Just pray for those in its path

I agree... I think, with storm surge, the fact that Katrina WAS a CAT5, not that far off-shore, contributed. Once a storm builds up that wall of water, with a super low center pressure, it doesn’t all just go away when the pressure increases. It keeps moving, with the storm...

It’s a tough call... but, I think the “authorities” go too far in pushing everyone to evacuate. To where?

There is NO FREAKING WAY I’m staying in ANY building that has ANY chance of being in storm surge. I’ve seen storm surge. There is NO truly safe place to be in a surge. But, outside of that? Most houses are safer than cheaply built motel rooms. Unless I’m looking at 120+mph winds WHERE I’M AT? I’m staying put.

But, that’s just me. Everyone needs to make their own judgements based on their own tolerance levels, special needs, health factors, etc, etc, ect...

Which is why I don’t like very generalize, government “mandatory” evacuations.

Maybe the Cuban people need to start to be loud and in charge instead of just planning on getting the US to take advantage.

Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers. Much appreciated. We just trimmed some old palm fronds. Found a big stash of plywood in the garage. Giving it out to neighbors who are VERY appreciative. Lawn mowing next.

Hey, I’m in S.E. Louisiana, I don’t believe ANY of these buffoons until it’s inland and Harvey proved even that can change! People who can see the future in January and predict the existence of things don’t know squat when they’re looking at a storm 24 hrs out! They get off on the power, IMO. On their word millions evacuate. It would make more sense to simply evacuate the Gulf Coast from June to October, make it a seasonal place, only a few permanent residents.

Was listening to local angler radio early this morning en route to get ice. They were salivating about the great fishing that will be available after the storm stirs them up.

One good piece of advice--kayak and canoe owners--write your contact info using indelible ink inside your vessel if storing outside so that folks can know where to return it after the storm.

They are, I’ve been there. Everything, and I mean everything, is old.

But somehow, they always seem to survive the storms..
